Carl Miele senior (born July 25, 1869 in Herzebrock , † December 24, 1938 in Gütersloh ) was a German designer and entrepreneur . In 1899 he founded the Miele company with Reinhard Zinkann .

Life

Miele was the son of the bricklayer Gerhard Miele and his wife, the widow Maria Anna Wittop nee. Sander. Miele's school career began at the age of six in Herzebrock, which lasted until 1883. He then did an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, which he successfully completed in 1888. During his apprenticeship, Miele was able to attend the Buxtehude building trade school for at least a short time .

Miele did his military service in the 15th Infantry Regiment , which was stationed in Minden . He then worked in his father's construction business and specialized in the construction of industrial chimneys. During this work he met Katharina Zuwickern and married her on April 22, 1896. With her he had three daughters and two sons (Carl junior (1897–1986) and Heinrich (1908–1964)). Three years later, Franz Wittop, a half-brother of Miele, married Anna Franziska Zuwickern, a younger sister of Katharina.

Act

The nucleus of the later Miele company was laid in 1895 when Miele acquired the building materials and hardware store of the late Friedrich Bremer in Herzebrock and quickly expanded the range to include household and kitchen appliances. Two years later, Miele founded the company Miele & Steinker together with the blacksmith Arnold Steinker . However, as early as July 26, 1899, Miele had to inform all business partners that Steinker had left the company.

With effect from 1 July 1899 founded Miele along with the salesman for Hardware Reinhard Zinkann the company Miele & Cie. This initially produced milk centrifuges . In particular, when it began manufacturing washing machines from 1901 (with motor from 1914), the company became internationally known as a household appliance manufacturer, with Zinkann building up a comprehensive sales system while Miele was responsible for the construction of the machines. Miele built Europe's first dishwasher in 1929 .

In 1907 Miele and Zinkann moved their company to Gütersloh, where they found suitable production halls in a former pump and metal goods factory and their plant was connected to the main line of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .

Miele and Zinkann's management was characterized by social measures. They introduced a company health insurance fund as early as 1909, and a year later they paid the workforce for the first time Christmas bonuses .

Honors

In 1932 Carl Miele received the honorary citizenship of the city of Gütersloh . He was a member of the board of the “ Parkbad Gütersloh ” association and in 1927 supported the construction of the pool financially.
