Liz Mohn (2017)

Elisabeth "Liz" Mohn (born June 21, 1941 as Elisabeth Beckmann in Wiedenbrück ) is a German entrepreneur and founder .

Liz Mohn, who was married to Reinhard Mohn until his death in 2009, represents the fifth generation of the owner family that played a key role in the Bertelsmann Group . She chairs the shareholders' meeting and the steering committee of Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft, where she holds the office of family spokeswoman and is a member of Bertelsmann's supervisory boards . Mohn is also Deputy Chairwoman of the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation .

For her diverse social commitment, Liz Mohn was awarded, among other things, the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Life

After elementary school, Liz Mohn initially accepted an apprenticeship as a dental assistant . She later applied to Bertelsmann as a telephone operator and from then on worked for the book club . At the age of 17 she met Reinhard Mohn . In 1963 she married the lecturer Joachim Scholz, and in 1978 the couple separated. In 1982 Reinhard Mohn's first marriage was divorced, and Liz and Reinhard Mohn married that same year. He adopted their children Brigitte , Christoph and Andreas Mohn .

In the following years, Liz Mohn gradually took on a more important role in the company and in the foundation: From 1986 she was on the advisory board of the Bertelsmann Foundation. In 1999 she was appointed to the shareholders' meeting of Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft , which controls voting rights at the Group's general meeting . In 2000 she also joined the executive committee of the Bertelsmann Foundation, which indirectly holds a majority stake in the company's capital. In 2002, Liz Mohn moved to the top of the Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft, where she took over the office of family spokeswoman and became a member of the Bertelsmann Supervisory Board. This gave her significant influence on the group.

After Reinhard Mohn's death in 2009, Liz Mohn succeeded him. Among other things, he gave her a veto right in the Bertelsmann management company. In addition, Liz Mohn largely received the rights of the Bertelsmann Foundation. This includes, for example, the right to propose the appointment of members of the Board of Trustees.

Liz Mohn was under special media scrutiny due to her dual role in the company and foundation. One of the reasons for this was the accusation that the Bertelsmann Foundation was mixing charitable activities with the Group's commercial interests.

engagement

In 1987 Liz Mohn launched the international singing competition New Voices . She had persuaded Herbert von Karajan to do this , who complained about the lack of funding in the field of opera singing . The competition developed into an internationally recognized "talent factory". It is carried out under the umbrella of the Bertelsmann Foundation. In addition, Liz Mohn started a project in 1999 to better promote musical culture among children, especially in primary schools.

In 1992, Liz Mohn founded the non-profit foundation Deutsche Schlaganfall-Hilfe , which is committed to the prevention and early detection of strokes . The cause was health problems of one of her sons, which caused symptoms similar to a stroke. Liz Mohn is president of the foundation, her daughter Brigitte chairs the board of trustees. An important element of her commitment to this topic is the "Rose Ball", where Liz Mohn collects donations for the fight against the disease.

In 2005, Liz Mohn continued her commitment to music culture by founding the Liz Mohn Culture and Music Foundation. For example, it supports musicals by children and adolescents and awards grants for opera singers. For this purpose, the Liz Mohn Culture and Music Foundation cooperates with the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden and other institutions. The foundation's capital is currently 16.2 million euros, and Mohn is the chairwoman of the board.

Liz Mohn is currently deputy chairwoman of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board and is responsible for the programs “Germany and Asia”, “Living Values”, “Musical Promotion”, “Companies in Society” and the “Leadership and Corporate Culture” competence center. Liz Mohn is also the President of the Fundación Bertelsmann and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Bertelsmann Foundation North America.

Mohn is also Deputy Chairwoman of the Presidential Council of the Björn Steiger Foundation .
