New Voices (proper spelling in capital letters) is an international singing competition. It was founded in 1987 on the initiative of Liz Mohn to promote young opera talent. New voices are considered a “talent factory”, which for many participants marks the beginning of an international career. The singing competition is organized every two years by the Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh and is one of their oldest projects.

history

Maria Celeng during the final concert 2011

In 1985 the Berliner Philharmoniker gave a concert in the Gütersloh town hall under the direction of Herbert von Karajan . The occasion was Bertelsmann's 150th anniversary . On the sidelines of the event, Karajan and Liz Mohn discussed the lack of support for opera singing. Compared to other countries, it is difficult to find suitable young people in Germany. Because of this, Mohn, who has been a member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Advisory Board since 1986, initiated an international singing competition. August Everding played a key role in the realization; as general director of the Bavarian State Theater, he contributed the necessary specialist knowledge.

The first singing competition took place in October 1987 in cooperation with the directors' group of the German Stage Association in the Gütersloh town hall. In contrast to other funding programs, participants found a large stage and a concert hall that they had to fill in with their voice. They were also accompanied by a symphony orchestra. In parallel to the competition, the Bertelsmann Stiftung organized a symposium at which experts debated cultural policy issues. It continued in the following years.

New voices was initially a “European singing competition”, since only artists trained in Europe were allowed to register. It is noteworthy that there were applicants from Eastern Europe right from the start. In the early 1990s, however, more and more applicants came from other countries, for example from China, Israel, Japan, Korea and the United States. As a result, the New Voices developed their present-day character as an "International Singing Competition". Over the years the number of applicants has risen steadily, today it is around 1,500 singers.

After the singing competitions in 1987, 1988 and 1989, the organizers changed to a two-year rhythm. The first master class took place in 1997 and has been held since then in the years between competitions. It serves to promote particularly talented applicants who have previously participated in the New Voices. In 2012, a song master class was added as a third format, which was continued in 2013 and 2014. In doing so, the organizers want to keep the song alive as an art form.

competition

The New Voices singing competition has existed for 30 years. In 2017, 1430 applicants from 76 nations registered. One of the prerequisites was that they were enrolled at a music college and had already studied or performed roles. The age limit for female singers is 28 years, singers may not be more than 30 years old. The jury first selects the best 40 to 45 talents. The process takes place worldwide under fair and professional conditions, for example in New York City or Beijing . The top talents will then be invited to a final in Gütersloh, which will lead to a semi-final and a final. These events are open to the public and the artists are accompanied by tutors.

Since 2013 there has been a female and male first, second and third place, which enables a fairer evaluation of the participants. Sometimes it can happen that two winners take the same place if they prove to be equal in front of the scoring committee. There are also sponsorship, audience and other special prizes that are intended to support singers in their development. The winners of the new votes will receive prize money depending on their placement. You will also receive long-term support afterwards, for example when accepting important commitments. Directors and agents use the singing competition as a talent exchange to bring promising singers from all parts of the world to their stages.

jury

August Everding headed the jury from 1987 to 1997. He died shortly before the 1999 competition. René Kollo took his place from 1999 to 2001. In 2001 Peter Ustinov took over the honorary chairmanship of the jury and at the same time the patronage of the New Voices. In 2003, 2005 and 2007 Gérard Mortier headed the board. Dominique Meyer has been chairman of the new votes jury since 2009.

The artistic director of the singing competition has been Gustav Kuhn since 1995 , who, according to the Bertelsmann Foundation, has been suspending his duties as artistic director since September 2018 and will not take part in the 2018 masterclass. The reason for this is the allegations against Kuhn of sexual assault and abuse of power in his function as director of the Tyrolean Festival Erl . Brian Dickie is responsible for the preselection.
