René Pape (born September 4, 1964 in Dresden ) is a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

René Pape received his training at the Dresden Kreuzchor and at the Carl-Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden, where he was already on stage as one of the boys in the Magic Flute . As a student he made his debut as a bassist in Mozart's Magic Flute at the State Opera Unter den Linden . In 1988 the State Opera hired him as a permanent member of the ensemble, to which he has been a member since then. There he sang numerous great roles in his field such as Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ), Rocco ( Fidelio ), König Heinrich ( Lohengrin ), Fafner ( Das Rheingold ), Pogner ( Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ), König Marke ( Tristan und Isolde ) and Ramphis ( Aida ). In 1994 he followed Wolfgang Wagner's call and made his first appearance at the Bayreuth Festival , where he sang Fasolt in the Rheingold . In 1991 Sir Georg Solti and Johannes Schaaf cast him as Sarastro at the Salzburg Festival . Here he sang Filippo ( Don Carlos ) in 1998 .

Pape, who has received two Grammy Awards , has sung at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opéra National de Paris , the Lyric Opera Chicago, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera , the La Scala in Milan and others of the Saxon State Opera Dresden . In January 2011 he made his recital debut at the Los Angeles Opera with songs by Hugo Wolf , Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert .

With Kenneth Branagh , Pape shot Mozart's The Magic Flute / Die Zauberflöte (cinema version), in which he plays and sings Sarastro. The film had its world premiere at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival . Pape can also be heard on the single Mann Gegen Mann (Musensohn remix) in an arrangement by Sven Helbig for the industrial metal band Rammstein .

Pape lives in Dresden- Hosterwitz .
