European Culture Prize Taurus

The European Culture Prize Taurus has honored achievements of outstanding European importance since 2012. The award is given to people and institutions with vision and creativity who have successfully rendered services to cultural life in Europe.

The price

The prize was brought into being by the European Cultural Forum , which was founded in 2011 in Dresden on the initiative of the founding president of the European cultural foundation Pro Europa Ernst Seidel .

The price Sculpture Taurus from bronze was created by the Dresden sculptor, restorer and board member of the 2012 European Culture Forum designed Sven Schubert. It represents Zeus , the supreme Olympic god of Greek mythology , who fell in love with Europe , the daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor and his wife Telephassa . Because of his suspicious wife Hera , Zeus transformed himself into a bull , in Latin Taurus , and abducted Europa on his back from Sidon . He swam with her to Matala in Crete . The foreign continent was named after Europe on the basis of a promise made by Aphrodite .

On October 3, 2017, the European Young Talent Award 2017 was awarded to the Felix Mendelssohn Youth Orchestra in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie . In addition to the award sculpture Taurus , the orchestra received a grant of 12,000 euros.

2018 was the occasion of the European Heritage year for the first time in cooperation between the European Cultural Forum and the Foundation Frauenkirche Dresden awarded the prize. The award ceremony took place on June 8, 2018 as part of a festive gala in the Dresden Frauenkirche.

The award ceremony for 2019 took place as part of a culture award gala on October 20, 2019 in the Vienna State Opera , the gala was broadcast on ORF III . Originally Plácido Domingo was also supposed to receive an award, but in August 2019 accusations against him of sexual harassment were raised in the current of the MeToo movement , so that the award ceremony for Domingo was postponed for one year. Plácido Domingo firmly denied the allegations against him.

The next award ceremony will take place on October 3, 2020 in Bonn .

The Next Generation award, endowed with € 7,500, was awarded for the first time and is intended to support young entrepreneurs whose innovative ideas “add value to society”. It was awarded to the Dresden start-up company Cloud & Heat .
