Piotr Beczała ( piɔtr beʈ͡ʂawa ) (born December 28, 1966 in Czechowice-Dziedzice , Poland) is a Polish opera singer ( lyric tenor ).

Life

Beczała completed her vocal studies in Katowice . After engagements in Linz (1992–1997) and Zurich (from 1997) and his first international appearances as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at the Salzburg Festival (1997), at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Vienna State Opera (1998), an international career followed in which he established himself worldwide as one of the main representatives of the lyric tenor subject.

In 2000 he made role debuts as Duke in Rigoletto at the Zurich Opera House and as Shepherd in Szymanowski's King Roger (Król Roger) at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. He also sang Tamino again at the Opéra National de Paris . In 2001 Beczała played Lenskij in Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin (Jewgenij Onegin) at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, Orombello in Beatrice di Tenda in Zurich, Vaudémont in “Iolanta” in Vienna and the Italian singer in Der Rosenkavalier in Brussels. In 2002 he sang Elvino in La sonnambula in Zurich, the singer in Der Rosenkavalier at the Hamburg State Opera and the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin, as well as the Duke in Rigoletto in Zurich, as well as Franz Waldung in the first complete concert version of Jacques Offenbach's opera Rheinnixen, which was only performed in abridged form in the 19th century (there is also a CD production). In 2003 Beczała sang again in Eugene Onegin , this time at the Opéra National in Paris. He also made his role debuts as Jeník in The Bartered Bride ( Prodaná nevěsta ) at the Zurich Opera House and as Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Nederslandse Opera Amsterdam. In 2004 he made his role debuts as Faust at the Royal Opera House London. He also sang in Rosenkavalier at the Salzburg Festival, Alfredo in La traviata in Athens and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In 2005 Beczała performed as Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto at Covent Garden in London, in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda at the Hamburg State Opera, in Werther at the Frankfurt Opera and in La Traviata in Bilbao. In 2006 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan and at the New York Metropolitan Opera , in both cases as Duke in Rigoletto , and at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as Alfredo in La Traviata , Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival and in Zurich. In 2007 Beczała sang Edgardo for the first time in Lucia di Lammermoor in Zurich. He also appeared in Rigoletto at the debut at Teatr Wielki in Warsaw , Werther and Rigoletto in Munich, Die Zauberflöte at the San Francisco Opera and La Traviata at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 2008 he sang Riccardo for the first time in A Masked Ball at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin, he also appeared in Eugen Onegin at London's Covent Garden and in La Traviata at the Vienna State Opera. Beczała made a role debut as Prince in Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák at the Salzburg Festival .

In February 2010 Beczala took over at the New York Metropolitan Opera, the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème alongside Anna Netrebko as Mimì. In 2012 he also sang the role of Duke in Michael Mayer's new production of Rigoletto at the MET . In May 2016 Piotr Beczała made his debut in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin with the title role of Lohengrin opposite Anna Netrebko (as Elsa) at the Semperoper in Dresden . In this role he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in summer 2018 . In February 2019 he made his role debut as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Vienna State Opera.

Piotr Beczała is also very successful as a concert soloist; his concert repertoire ranges from Mozart , Cherubini and Schubert to Haydn , Beethoven , Schumann , Brahms , Bruckner , Berlioz and Dvořák to Rossini's Stabat Mater , Verdi's Messa da Requiem and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde .
