Jean Marie Paul Lafond (born July 1, 1847 in Rouen , † September 21, 1918 in Pau ) was a French art historian , draftsman and etcher .

Life

His father, Jean-Marie Lafond, a merchant, traded in Beaujolais wine . Nothing is known about the education of the son Paul Lafond. From 1900 he was the curator of the municipal art museum in Pau and became involved with publications on Goya (1902), Murillo (1908), Rogier van der Weyden (1912), El Greco (1913), Hieronymus Bosch (1914) and Edgar Degas (1918 / 19) known as an art historian. When designing these of his art books, his second job, that of an etcher , came in handy. Lafond had mastered the use of such graphic techniques in Louis Capdevielle's workshop . Initially, he had produced etchings based on models by Camille Corot , Charles-François Daubigny , Charles Jacque and Alfred Elias and then emerged with his own work ( Waldrand im Winter , Am Kirchenportal ) - for example 1878 to 1885 and 1897 to 1904 in the Salon der Société national des beaux-arts . He was friends with Edgar Degas, who was often in Pau.

Under the signature P. Lafond he wrote numerous entries - mainly on Spanish painters and sculptors, but also on decorative art - for volumes 1 to 5 of the Thieme-Becker artist lexicon .

Paul Lafond was a member of the Pau City Council from 1900 until his death. A square and the media library were named after him in Pau.
