Anja Harteros ( modern Greek Χάρτερος ; born July 23, 1972 in Bergneustadt ) is a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Anja Harteros grew up in Bergneustadt as the daughter of a Greek father and a German mother, she also has a sister and a brother. Already in their youth their parents introduced them to classical music and singing. Finally her music teacher at the Wüllenweber grammar school in Bergneustadt discovered her talent and advised her to have her voice trained professionally. In 1986, at the age of 14, she began her vocal training with Astrid Huber-Aulmann in Gummersbach while she was still at school .

She had her first appearances at institute concerts and at a school performance as Countess in Figaro's wedding in 1990 at the Wüllenweber-Gymnasium, in 1992 she gave a first concert at the Cantonal School Schwyz in Switzerland . From 1990 she was supervised for many years by the conductor and solo repetitor of the Cologne opera Wolfgang Kastorp with regard to the musical interpretation of the parts she had worked on. Kastorp also accompanied her at various piano concerts.

After graduating from high school in 1991, she studied singing with Liselotte Hammes at the Cologne University of Music . Her singing teacher Huber-Aulmann continued to take care of her during her studies until her exams in spring 1996. During her studies, further concert tours with Astrid Huber-Aulmann to Russia and the USA took place in 1993 and 1994, during which the singer attracted great attention . Even before her exams, she was engaged as a permanent member of the Schiller Theater in Gelsenkirchen and Wuppertal. After graduating in 1996, she was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Bonn Opera .

Her international career began when she won the BBC's Cardiff Singer of the World competition and the Welsh National Opera in summer 1999. Within a very short time she sang on the renowned stages around the world. In Cardiff she met Sir Peter Jonas , who shortly afterwards called her to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where she has been a particularly frequent guest since then. Her other places of work include Frankfurt am Main , Lyon , Amsterdam, Oslo , Tokyo , Dresden , Paris , London, Zurich , Hamburg , Vienna , New York , Milan and Berlin ( German Opera and State Opera ) as well as the Salzburg Festival .

Anja Harteros works with leading conductors such as Daniel Barenboim , Riccardo Chailly , Sir John Eliot Gardiner , Bernard Haitink , Mariss Jansons , Marek Janowski , Philippe Jordan , James Levine , Fabio Luisi , Zubin Mehta , Riccardo Muti , Kent Nagano , Sir Roger Norrington , Sir Antonio Pappano , Kirill Petrenko , Sir Simon Rattle , Donald Runnicles or Christian Thielemann .

As part of the Munich Opera Festival 2005 she sang the title role in a new production of Handel's Alcina (also available as a CD edition), where she took over the role of Elsa in Lohengrin at the 2009 Festival . In January 2010 she sang Mimì from La Bohème at the Cologne Opera. In June 2011 she made her role debut as Field Marshal in Der Rosenkavalier at the Bavarian State Opera. There she took over the role of Donna Leonora in the premiere of La forza del destino in 2013 . In the spring of 2015, she made her role debut alongside Jonas Kaufmann as Aida in Giuseppe Verdi 's opera of the same name. On March 12, 2017, she made her debut as Maddalena in Umberto Giordano's opera Andrea Chénier at the Bavarian State Opera, again with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role and the baritone Luca Salsi as Carlo Gérard . Another frequent stage partner of Anja Harteros is the Czech tenor Pavel Černoch . On March 24, 2018, at the opening of the Salzburg Easter Festival , Harteros gave the title role in Giacomo Puccini's Tosca alongside Aleksandr Antonenko and Ludovic Tézier together with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden under Christian Thielemann . Also under Thielemann, Anja Harteros made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in July 2018 as Elsa in a new production of Lohengrin .

Her repertoire also includes roles such as Elettra ( Idomeneo ), Contessa ( Le nozze di Figaro ), Donna Anna ( Don Giovanni ), Fiordiligi ( Così fan tutte ), Agathe ( Der Freischütz ), Elisabeth ( Tannhäuser ), Eva ( Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ), Sieglinde ( Die Walküre ), Leonora ( Il trovatore ), Violetta Valéry ( La traviata ), Amelia ( Simon Boccanegra ), Elisabeth von Valois ( Don Carlos ), Desdemona ( Otello ) and Alice Ford ( Falstaff ), Micaëla ( Carmen ) as well as the title roles in Arabella and Ariadne auf Naxos .

In addition to opera, Anja Harteros also devotes herself to concert and lieder singing. She gave concerts and recitals in many cities in Germany and abroad (Schwarzenberg / Hohenems, Boston, Florence, London, Edinburgh, Vicenza, Tel Aviv etc.). Her song CD From Eternal Love with Wolfram Rieger was awarded the Orphée d'Or .

Anja Harteros lives with her husband Wolfgang Kastorp in the Westerwald . She also has an apartment in Munich.
