Luca Salsi (* 19th March 1975 in San Secondo Parmense ) is an Italian baritone , in particular for his Verdi - repertoire is known.

Life

Luca Salsi studied at the Conservatorio di Musica Arrigo Boito in Parma with the soprano Lucetta Bizzi and at the Accademia Rossiniana with Alberto Zedda . He attended master classes a. a. with Carlo Meliciani.

He made his debut in 1997 at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna with the opera La scala di seta by Gioachino Rossini and had other engagements here. In 2000 he won the first prize at the Viotti Festival in Vercelli , which was awarded for the first time in twenty-five years, and in the same year he sang the Leporello at the Bassano Festival, the Guglielmo in Cagliari and in Bologna Antonio in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims . He later appeared in Il barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini in Naples and at the invitation of Plácido Domingo at the Washington National Opera in Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart .

After winning first prize at the Viotti Festival, Luca Salsi embarked on a fast and successful career that quickly took him to some of the world's largest stages: the Metropolitan Opera in New York City , the Teatro alla Scala in Milan , the Royal Opera House in London , the Washington National Opera , the Salzburg Festival , the Los Angeles Opera , the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin , the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , the opera festival Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence , the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome , the Teatro Regio in Parma, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona , the Teatro Massimo in Palermo , the Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago near Viareggio , the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Teatro Real in Madrid .

He has worked with important conductors such as James Conlon , Riccardo Muti , James Levine , Daniele Gatti , Placido Domingo , Gustavo Dudamel , Nicola Luisotti , Renato Palumbo , Donato Renzetti and Alberto Zedda as well as with renowned directors such as Robert Carsen , Hugo De Ana, Antony Minghella , Werner Herzog , Franco Zeffirelli and David McVicar together.

In the 2012/2013 season he made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Don Carlo in La forza del destino by Verdi, followed by other important debuts in Verdi roles such as Macbeth , as Conte di Luna in Il trovatore , as Francesco Foscari in I due Foscari and Nabucco at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome under the direction of Riccardo Muti . He opened the 2013/2014 season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Macbeth, directed by Riccardo Muti.

Further engagements in recent seasons have included: Un ballo in maschera in Bologna , Lucia di Lammermoor and Don Carlo at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City , La traviata in Turin , London and Munich, Nabucco in Verona , Macbeth and Nabucco in Barcelona, Rigoletto in Madrid, I due Foscari at La Scala in Milan , Falstaff in Chicago and Macbeth in Stockholm (both under the direction of Riccardo Muti ), Nabucco and Rigoletto in Rome, Ernani and Il templario at the Salzburg Festival.

Luca Salsi received special attention from opera lovers and the press in April 2015 when, a quarter of an hour before the performance began, he replaced an indisposed Plácido Domingo in an afternoon recital by Ernani at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and in the evening, as planned, in a performance of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor gave the Lord Enrico Ashton. Luca Salsi is particularly known for his extensive Verdi repertoire. When asked by the newspaper Corriere della Sera , "What does it mean to grow up in the land of Verdi?", Salsi replied in 2016:

In October 2017 he made his debut in the role of Scarpia in Tosca at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome.

At the 2017/2018 season opening, he took on the role of Carlo Gérard in the opera Andrea Chénier at the Teatro alla Scala , for which he had been selected by the conductor Riccardo Chailly . At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City he could be heard in Il trovatore by Verdi, Lucia di Lamermoor by Donizetti and Luisa Miller by Verdi.
