David McVicar

Sir David McVicar (born 1966 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish opera director .

life and work

McVicar studied acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and graduated in 1989. He works regularly for the Glyndebourne Festival , the London Royal Opera House in Covent Garden , the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona and the La Monnaie in Brussels . In 2009 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and from 2010 to 2012 he staged the entire Ring des Nibelungen in Strasbourg . At the beginning of 2013 he directed the opera Maria Stuarda by Gaetano Donizetti at the Metropolitan Opera . In the same year he staged Tristan and Isolde at the Vienna State Opera .

McVicar's theatrical work spans a broad spectrum, he has staged operas by Handel , Mozart , Beethoven , Verdi , Puccini and Benjamin Britten . His style can be called naturalistic .

In 2012, Elizabeth II raised him to the nobility as a Knight Bachelor as part of her Birthday Honors .
