The hut is manned on weekends in June, continuously from July to the end of August and on weekends until around mid-October. During the rest of the time, a winter room is available for six people. Reservations are required in summer and winter.

history

The Calandahütte was built in the summer of 1891 by the Rätia section of the Swiss Alpine Club, but not yet where it stands today. Since the hut was well attended, it was expanded at the end of the 19th century with an extension from 14-16 to 40 beds. In 1914 the hut was destroyed by a dust avalanche and was rebuilt in its current location in 1917. The hut was renovated in 1967 and a winter room was added. In 2005 it was completely renovated and modernized again. The hut celebrated its 100th birthday in summer 2017.

The hut takes its name from the Calanda mountain range on which it stands. It is derived from the Latin word calare , which means to condescend . So Calanda is “the condescending one” , which indicates the numerous riffs and landslides down to the valley floor of the Rhine Valley in earlier times.
