Neo Rauch, Brühl (2007)

Neo Hanno Rauch (born April 18, 1960 in Leipzig ) is a German painter and university professor. He is internationally successful and is considered the most important representative of the so-called New Leipzig School .

Life and career

Neo Rauch's father Hanno Rauch, born in Gera in 1939, studied at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art ; his mother Helga Wand studied book design in Leipzig . Four weeks after Neo's birth, both parents were killed at the age of 21 and 19 in a railway accident in Leipzig . Neo Rauch then grew up with his maternal grandparents in Aschersleben , who in turn were still comparatively young (the grandmother was 39 years old at the time of the accident). According to Rauch, nothing was missing and he later referred to the grandparents as "helicopter parents".

He put on the Extended Secondary School "Thomas Müntzer" (now School Stephaneum the) High School from. Rauch studied painting at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art , first from 1981 to 1986 with Arno Rink and then from 1986 to 1990 as a master student with Bernhard Heisig . From 1993 to 1998 he worked as Arno Rink's assistant at the Leipzig Academy, from 2005 to 2009 as a university lecturer and from 2009 to 2014 as an honorary professor. His commitment went beyond the activity as a teacher; In 2007 he curated an exhibition with Timm Rautert entitled “You have to hurry if you want to see something…” at Gut Selikum in Neuss .

Neo Rauch is married to the painter Rosa Loy . The two have a grown son and live in Markkleeberg near Leipzig. He works in the former Leipzig cotton spinning mill . Rauch describes Leipzig as his home and artistic breeding ground: “It is a place of concentration and inspiration. The best ideas come to me here. "

Artistic work

The group exhibition “Young Artists in the Leipzig District” in the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg in 1986 marked the beginning of public awareness of Rauch's work. He rejected his pictures from the 1980s. In 1991 Neo Rauch had his first solo exhibition in the Leipzig gallery at Thomaskirchhof and in the same year in the Schwind gallery in Frankfurt. In 1993, Rolf Lauter , deputy director at the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, discovered the artist's work and, thanks to the support of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation, realized his first non-commercial presentation of his latest pictures in the exhibition rooms of the Dresdner Bank AG Frankfurt. In the text of the catalog, Lauter referred to Rauch's combinatorial principle of sampling, which included elements from art history, paraphrases of surrealism and metaphors from everyday life and work. The first large institutional solo exhibition (“Randgebiet”) by Rauch was organized by Klaus Werner in 2000 at the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Leipzig. In 2006 the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg dedicated a retrospective to him. The small exhibition “para” followed in 2007 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York .

Rauch's imagery is characterized by a bright, opaque color and shows figures in overlapping spaces and times. The style permeates socialist realism , but is also influenced by pop art and comics . Conceptually, the work is close to surrealism and can be seen as magical realism. It is not uncommon for Rauch to dream up his subjects. The pictures are said to be “peculiar, suggestive and timeless”. In the magazine “Texte zur Kunst” he was portrayed as a representative of German neo-conservatism .

One of his discoverers, Roberta Smith , sparked enthusiasm for Neo Rauch in the USA with an article about the “painter who came out of the cold” . Rauch's pictures hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig and are shown in solo exhibitions, such as B. in the Vienna Albertina (2004/2005).

In 2006 Rauch published eight lithographs for five calendar stories by Botho Strauss under the title Der Mittler . In 2007 he designed templates for three windows with motifs from the life of Elisabeth of Thuringia for the Elisabeth Chapel in Naumburg Cathedral . At that time, around 1.5 million US dollars were paid for a work on the art market . Rauch is represented by Gerd Harry Lybke's gallery “Eigen + Art” in Leipzig and Berlin and by David Zwirner in New York.

On June 1st, 2012 the exhibition rooms of the graphic foundation Neo Rauch in his hometown Aschersleben were opened in the presence of Neo Rauch . The foundation was founded in May 2012 by Rauch, his gallery owners and the city of Aschersleben and is based on a donation from the artist, who gave one copy of his graphic work to his hometown.

From 2013 to 2016 Neo Rauch had the documentary filmmaker Nicola Graef and a small film team accompany him on his work. This resulted in the film Neo Rauch - Companions and Companions , which premiered on November 2, 2016 in Leipzig at the 59th Leipzig International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film. The start date in German cinemas was March 2, 2017.

Neo Rauch and Rosa Loy designed the set for the Lohengrin opera at the 2018 Bayreuth Festival .

In a contribution by ZEIT , Wolfgang Ullrich, in his article “Auf dunkler Scholle” in May 2019 , counted Rauch among a group of “right-wing artists who acted as the last defenders of artistic freedom ” and who use the narrative that Germany is part of a “GDR 2.0 ”. In response, Neo Rauch painted the picture “Der Anbräuner”, which Christoph Gröner bought at an auction for € 750,000 . Georg Diez had previously described Rauch as a "right-wing painter" in June 2018 after he had described the "right-wing writer Uwe Tellkamp as a 'revenant Stauffenberg' '" in an interview with Handelsblatt and had emphasized that in relation to the migration crisis Empathy should not lead to “that we let our actions be guided by ethics . It pushes us into the gesture of the morally superior who must not ask what consequences his willingness to provide unrestricted help will have in ten or twenty years. "
