Botho Strauss
Botho Strauss (born December 2, 1944 in Naumburg ) is a German writer and playwright . He is one of the most successful and most performed contemporary dramatists on German stages.
Life
Botho Strauss is the son of the chemist, pharmacist and medical journalist Eduard Strauss (1890–1971). After attending school in Remscheid and Bad Ems, he studied German literature , theater history and sociology in Cologne and Munich for a few semesters and dropped out without a degree. Between 1967 and 1970 he was a journalist for Theater heute magazine . He then worked as a dramaturge at the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer until 1975 . He then established himself as a freelance writer.
Botho Strauss now lives in Berlin and in the Oberuckersee community in the Uckermark . With the radio author Manuela Reichart , he has son Simon , born in 1988 , theater editor in the features section of the FAZ and book author.
Works and reviews
Strauss' first works were received positively by the critics. Marcel Reich-Ranicki wrote in the FAZ on August 10, 1977 : “Because what he can already do shows talent. What is still missing can be learned. This man is a great hope in our literature. Perhaps the novel of his generation will come from him. "
His novel The Young Man (1984) sparked a controversial discussion in literary studies . In 1985 he published his first long poem (75 pages): This memory of someone who was only a guest for one day. It touches all forms of social coexistence between people in a variety of stanzas and meters . It is an attempt by a lyric self to redefine its position. In 1987 he received the Bavarian Literature Prize ( Jean-Paul Prize ) in recognition of the entire literary work.
In addition to plays, Strauss has written short stories and books with essays and aphorisms . In it he also deals with scientific and philosophical questions: with questions of technology and evolution; so in beginninglessness (1992). Since the late 1980s, he has come under criticism because of his essays critical of democracy and civilization - above all, swelling Bocksgesang , published in the Spiegel in 1993 . Sentences such as "that a people wants to assert their moral law against others and is ready to make blood sacrifices for it, we no longer understand and consider it wrong and reprehensible in our liberal-libertarian self-centeredness", etc. a. sharply criticized by Ignatz Bubis . Bubis later qualified his criticism. Heimo Schwilk and Ulrich Schacht took the essay as an impulse and basis for creating their programmatic anthology, The Self-Confident Nation , together with 25 other authors .
Praise and criticism also appeared in 2004 - on the occasion of his 60th birthday - in the German and international press. In February 2006 published Strauss: The conflict (in Der Spiegel ). In 2005/2006 his play The Desecration was premiered in Paris and Berlin . In 2006 his 41 calendar stories ( Mikado ) were published by Hanser Verlag. Five calendar stories with eight chalk drawings by Neo Rauch were also published by Kleinheinrich (Münster) in a limited edition (180 copies) under the title Der Mittler . In 2007 his first novel was published: The Clumsy .
In his essay: The Painter Dissolves the Spell ( Der Spiegel , 30/2008), he deals with Gerhard Richter's “overpainted photos” . Through the cooperation with Neo Rauch and the processing of "overpainted photos" by Gerhard Richter, Strauss also related his literary work to contemporary painting. A continuation followed in 2009 in cooperation with Thomas Demand : Botho Strauss provided unpublished texts as captions for photographs of German history since 1945, which the visual artist is exhibiting in the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin .
At the beginning of April 2009, Strauss' new piece Leichtes Spiel was played at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel . Nine people of a woman premiered by Dieter Dorn . These writes Gerhard Stadelmaier in the FAZ : "The great women world theater. First performances of BS are the festivals of the theater. The light-hearted Dorn is the congenial directing partner of the playwright Strauss, who takes the hardest thing lightly because he doesn't solve it, but keeps it in suspension ... “The play Big and Small was in the lead role in 2011 in English translation by the Sydney Theater Company performed with Cate Blanchett ; the production came to Europe in 2012 and was shown at the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen, the Wiener Festwochen , the Théâtre de la Ville Paris and the London Barbican .
On October 2, 2015, Der Spiegel published the glossary The Last German by Strauss. In this, in view of the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 , he laments the imminent end of German intellectual history from his point of view. In an interview with Deutschlandradio , the former president of the PEN Center Germany, Johano Strasser , rated the gloss as a font consisting of small bows to right-wing, populist movements. Richard Kämmerlings saw in the text above all a provocation that evokes a spiritual, purely aesthetically defined tradition as a filtering catalyst for everything negative in national history and results in a dream of innocent Germany. The writer Martin Mosebach defended Strauss against these allegations and saw in the gloss less a defense against migrants than a complaint about the cultural state of Germany and a people who have become disproportionate and have no connection to their past. He accused the German feature pages of targeting Strauss.
His works are published in numerous languages. In spring 2018, Strauss moved from Hanser Verlag to Rowohlt . Strauss rarely gives interviews and does not appear in front of the camera. For a report on his 75th birthday in the 3sat broadcast Kulturzeit , he invited a television team to his house in the Uckermark.
He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .
