Niels-Peter Rudolph

Niels-Peter Rudolph (born May 2, 1940 in Wuppertal ) is a German director and general manager .

Career

Director

In parallel to only briefly studying theater and art history in Berlin and Kiel , Rudolph worked at the Kiel student theater . He became assistant director to Hans Schalla in Bochum . There he directed Carl Sternheim's Bürger Schippel in 1963 .

Further productions followed between 1968 and 1971 before Rudolph became director of theater in Basel for a year in 1972 . From 1973 he alternately directed in Hamburg and Stuttgart , including Shakespeare , Carlo Goldoni and Botho Strauss . Chekhov's uncle Vanja at the Schillertheater Berlin and Strauss' Familiar Faces, Mixed Feelings from Stuttgart were both invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 1976 . Between 1977 and 1979 his productions were an integral part of the Berlin Theatertreffen. He was represented there with eight nominations.

In 1977 Rudolph was awarded the German Critics' Prize.

Intendant

In 1979 Rudolph became director of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg , where he initially staged Chekhov's Three Sisters . In 1984 Rudolph surprisingly announced his resignation as artistic director, despite his contract that was extended until 1988. He was responding to a letter from the Mayor of Hamburg at the time , Klaus von Dohnanyi . From 1985 on he worked freelance in Stuttgart , Munich , Berlin and Hamburg. In his later stage years, Rudolph also turned to opera . Rudolph teaches at the Hamburg Theater Academy of the Hamburg University of Music and Theater .

Personal

He is an older brother of the actor Hans Christian Rudolph (1943–2014) and married to the film and theater actress Hildegard Schmahl . Her children are the director  Hannah Rudolph  and the actor Sebastian Rudolph .
