Oliver Mark
Oliver Mark (born February 20, 1963 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German photographer and artist who is best known for his portraits of international personalities.
Life
He discovered his enthusiasm for photography at the age of nine when he won first prize in a painting competition, while traveling to the Olympic Games in Munich. On this occasion, his father gave him his first camera. He was fascinated by his own pictures, which looked so different from the magazines he had known before. After training as a photographer, he first worked in fashion photography. a. in the Burda photo studios in Offenburg. He has been working as a freelance photographer since 1991. As a guest student, he attended Katharina Sieverding's (Visual Culture) seminars at the Berlin University of the Arts , which is particularly known for its large-format photographs.
Oliver Mark is the father of two sons and currently lives in Berlin .
plant
Since the 1990s he has been photographing celebrities more often, he became known for portraits of Anthony Hopkins and Jerry Lewis . Other people he portrayed include publicly significant figures such as Angela Merkel , Pope Benedict XVI. and Joachim Gauck , but also stars like Ben Kingsley , Cate Blanchett and Tom Hanks . His personal interest is in contemporary artists and their creative world. He has close contact with established, but also with many young artists, whom he portrays in their work environment.
In addition to the single-lens reflex camera, he often uses his old 680 Polaroid camera. In these instant shots, the familiarity and closeness to the sitter is particularly evident.
“His portraits tell stories of alienation, overlapping, fragmentation, splitting, duplication, tying, packaging, acting - and often reveal more than intended, both about the sitter and the photographer. The carefully staged snapshots point beyond themselves as “social stills”: They analyze people, they locate their role in society, they are mirror images.
Concentrated closeness alternates with almost meaningful staging and intentionally casual images.
The picture frame runs through his entire photographic work as a motif, as a stylistic device, as a source of tension, as a boundary and message. Be it the artistic still life of the empty frames, which with their black surfaces refer to the eponymous “non-appearance” or the arrangement of his works in lavishly gilded baroque or antique oval frames: the associative proximity to old master painting - reinforced by the recurring The motif of the hands or vanitas quotes in the picture - does not miss its ennobling effect, especially when it is again ironically broken.
Oliver Mark is a character seeker. Wherever he finds what he is looking for, where he is most at home, strongest, closest, a face becomes a face in which our time is reflected. The viewer is hit hard by the intimacy of the moment and one is happy to be able to share this moment. This is the case with Louise Bourgeois, whom Oliver Mark photographed in New York in 1996 at the age of 85. "
He worked u. a. for the magazines Architectural Digest , Rolling Stone , Der Spiegel , Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin , Stern , Time , Vanity Fair , Vogue and Die Zeit .
In 2013 one of his photographs was awarded a prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2014 Oliver Mark brought out his own magazine called Oliver - Hooker Artist Photographer - The Whole Truth About Oliver Mark .
Collections
Oliver Mark's pictures can be found in the collections of the Liechtenstein National Museum , the Chemnitz Art Collections , the Bukowina Museum in Suceava , the Goethe Institute Dublin , the Würth Collection and in private collections.

Collaborations
Oliver Mark has been working with the artist Christian Hoischen in a collaboration Hoischen / Mark since 2017 . According to Chiara Thies, the collaboration is characterized by “criticism and correction” “until all certainty is shattered. Only jokes offer salvation. "
Exhibitions
In the exhibition Natura Morta , which was presented in two parts in the Gemäldegalerie of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and in the Natural History Museum Vienna 2017, he addresses the question of how humans deal with nature and the environment, especially the animal world, but also the Aesthetics and beauty of death. Oliver Mark's still life photographs were taken in the evidence chamber of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in Bonn in 2015. His idea was to photograph ivory carvings, protected animal and plant parts, hunting trophies etc., which were confiscated by customs, in such a way that the products are first illuminated by lighting (old-master daylight, only illuminated through a gap) and the selection of the backgrounds Generate a desire to look at the viewer. In the Natural History Museum Vienna these were put in three groups next to different animal preparations, whereby the question of species protection is discussed. Oliver Mark presented his photographs in historical painting frames, which he selects at auctions and in antique shops. In the picture gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, this resulted in exciting correspondences between the genres of painting and photography, but also between photographic and painted still lifes. Still lifes and animal pieces by Dutch painters such as Willem van Aelst , Jan Weenix or those who succeeded Peter Paul Rubens were shown from the collection of the Gemäldegalerie .
