Norbert Schwontkowski (born April 29, 1949 in Bremen-Blumenthal , † June 14, 2013 in Bremen ) was a German painter .

Life

Schwontkowski studied free painting from 1968 to 1973 at the University of Design in Bremen and at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg . In 1973 he had his first solo exhibition at the Böttcherstraße art show in Bremen. In 1974 he was involved in the exhibition 20 Bremer in the Kunsthalle Bremen . He has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in New Zealand, the Netherlands and Italy. In 1994 he was awarded the Bremen Art Prize together with Andreas Slominski . In the same year he received the Overbeck Prize for Fine Arts . He is now one of those contemporary German painters whose work is also attracting attention in the international art scene. His paintings and other works can be found in several private and public collections at home and abroad. In 2003 Norbert Schwontkowski was one of the more than 100 new members of the German Association of Artists over the past four years . Forty new members were given an exhibition opportunity in Bonn's Bundeskunsthalle (on the occasion of the club's centenary) ; including Harald Naegeli , Bjørn Melhus and Susanne Weirich . After Schwontkowski had already lectured in Bremen and Greifswald as well as a visiting professorship in Braunschweig, a professorship for painting followed in 2005 at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, which he resigned in 2009.

Schwontkowski's mostly figurative subjects play with the unconscious and the surreal, his figures and motifs, which are put into the picture with a variety of painterly means, often float in wide, undefined spaces.
