Overbeck Prize for Fine Arts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overbeck Prize for Fine Arts is a German art prize. It should promote artists and serve the understanding of contemporary art.

The prize was donated in 1988 by the Lübeck publisher Charles Coleman († December 31, 1991), the grandson of the founder of the Lübeck General-Anzeiger Charles Colemann (1852-1936) and the son of the publisher Robert Coleman (1897-1982). The occasion was the 200th birthday of the painter, draftsman and illustrator Friedrich Overbeck (1789–1869) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Overbeck Society .

The prize should be awarded every three years as the main prize (endowed with 10,000 DM) and as a sponsorship prize (endowed with 5,000 DM). After the death of the founder Charles Coleman and the withdrawal of the Coleman family from the awarding of the prize, the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities was won as a new sponsor; the prize was called the Overbeck Prize for the Fine Arts of the Charitable . Only one prize was awarded, which was endowed with 10,000 DM (today 5,000 euros). In addition, the award winner will receive a solo exhibition in the Overbeck Pavilion in Lübeck.

The award is made without application by a jury made up of a representative of the Overbeck Society, a board member of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities and up to five other people (art critics, journalists, museum directors, artists).
