Yilmaz Dziewior (* 1964 in Bonn ) is an art historian and curator for contemporary art . He is director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

life and work

Yilmaz Dziewior studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Bonn and in London . In the early 1990s, Dziewior worked as an art critic for the Bonner Rundschau . In 1998 he started his doctoral project under the title Blick durch den Spiegel. Glass as a space-defining element in Mies van der Rohe's work . With this thesis it was in 2005 Tilmann Buddensieg on Art History at the Humboldt University in Berlin doctorate .

In 1997 he curated a project with Sarah Lucas at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne   , where he was again responsible for part of the exhibition in 1999. From 2001 to 2008 he was the director of the Kunstverein in Hamburg and also worked as a freelance curator . In 2003 he was also appointed professor for art history (part-time) at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts , where he taught until 2009. Between 2009 and 2015 he directed the Kunsthaus Bregenz . In 2015 Dziewior curated the Austria Pavilion for the Biennale di Venezia . Before working in Bregenz, he was director of the Kunstverein in Hamburg for eight years and, at the same time, taught as a professor of art theory at the local University of Fine Arts.

On February 1, 2015, Dziewior succeeded Philipp Kaiser and the acting director Katia Baudin as director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne . From 1996 to 1999 he worked as a freelancer for the Museum Ludwig . In 1997 he realized a project there as a curator with the artist Sarah Lucas and in 1999 was responsible for the contemporary part of the exhibition Kunstwelten im Dialog. From Gauguin to the global present .

At the beginning of 2018, Dziewior announced a scientific reassessment of the American holdings of the Museum Ludwig, which “mainly owned art by white, heterosexual, male Americans”. The aim is to reassess the contents and history of the collection; in relation to aspects of postcolonial , gender and queer studies . Dziewior said: “It's not about a new story, but a parallel narrative.” The art-historical canon of values should also be questioned in order to identify the hierarchies between cultures. There are also plans to update the history of the collection with a view to art from South America, Africa and Asia and to strengthen female positions.

Dziewior's work is characterized by a decided interest in social issues, whereby in this context his preoccupation with identity-political and cultural attributions should be emphasized. Yilmaz Dziewior pursues an interdisciplinary approach that is particularly evident in exhibitions and projects on architecture ( Arno Brandlhuber , raumlabor Berlin, Kuehn Malvezzi , Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz ) as well as theater and dance ( René Pollesch , She She Pop , Yvonne Rainer ). A basic premise of his approach is the analysis of the respective context, which is expressed both in his experimental formats for the KUB Arena in Bregenz and in his insert series for the Hamburger Kunstverein . At the beginning of May 2020, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas appointed Dziewior as curator of the official German contribution to the 59th Venice Biennale in 2021.
