Philipp Kaiser (* 1972 in Bern ) is a Swiss exhibition curator and art critic . He was director of the Museum Ludwig from November 1, 2012 to February 28, 2014, succeeding Kasper Koenig . In March 2016, Kaiser was appointed curator of the Swiss Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 .

Career

After studying art history and German language and literature at the University of Basel and the University of Hamburg from 1994 to 2001 , he received his doctorate in art history in Basel under Gottfried Boehm on the artist duo Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler . In 2001, Bernard Mendes Bürgi , then the new director of the Kunstmuseum Basel , appointed him as curator at the branch of the house, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst . Kaiser worked there until 2007. From March 2007 he worked as a senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (Moca). Here he worked on exhibitions on Californian conceptual art and presented for the first time a museum solo exhibition by Sterling Ruby and a retrospective by Jack Goldstein .

From 2004 to 2011 he taught art theory and art history at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and in the Art History Department as well as in the MFA Program in the Graduate Program of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He was a member of the jury that decided on the direction of the sixth Berlin Biennale 2010. Kaiser worked as a catalog author and art critic, since 1998 with numerous articles and reviews on contemporary art in magazines such as Artforum , Camera Austria , Eikon , KUNSTBULLETIN and Parkett .

Kaiser has curated monographic retrospectives, for example, on Johanna Billing , Louise Lawler , Christian Philipp Müller , Bruce Nauman , Daniel Richter , Simon Starling and Amelie von Wulffen . In 2006 he curated the highly regarded group exhibition "Flashback, a revision of the art of the 80s" and recognized the importance of the 80s at an early stage. Kaiser is regarded as a reflective and precise exhibition maker. In addition to Gabriele Schor and Marc-Olivier Wahler, Kaiser was a member of the Verbund Advisory Board of the Verbund Collection from 2005 to 2011 , which was founded in 2004 by Verbund, Austria's largest electricity company and is dedicated to contemporary international art from 1970 to today. In addition to painting and conceptual art, photography and video are among Kaiser's exhibition focuses and areas of interest. In 2007, Kaiser had played a role behind the scenes at the Düsseldorf art fair “Düsseldorf Contemporary” (dc) in 2007 when he was on the selection committee; the fair, which was launched ad hoc, did not get beyond a single edition. Kaiser sat on the jury for the management of the sixth Berlin Biennale 2010, which was proposed to curator Kathrin Rhomberg, who also previously worked in Cologne. At his future place of work, the Ludwig Museum, Kaiser would like to “get all of Pop Art out of the cellar and reorganize it. I would like to use the special features of the museum without letting the collection dictate the program. "

In 2012, Kaiser received a seven-year contract in Cologne with an option to extend it for a further three years. Kaiser is particularly interested in the 1990s, which were largely shaped in Cologne and which he intends to address in his exhibition projects. In February 2014, he resigned from office for family reasons.

Kaiser has been responsible for the exhibition program in the three locations of the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York, Paris and London since 2019.
