The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) is an art museum in Newport Beach in the US state of California . The existing since 1918 establishment is located in the business district Newport Center in the district of Corona del Mar .

The museum mainly exhibits works of contemporary and modern art . The collection includes nearly 3,000 copies that represent a cross-section of Californian art from the early 20th century to the present. The OCMA has around 60,000 visitors annually.

history

The Orange County Museum of Art opened in 1918 under the name Laguna Beach Art Association . The three branches in Newport Beach , Laguna Beach and Costa Mesa grew quickly and gained national attention. The California Biennal was launched in 1984. The museum has organized exhibitions with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Renaissance Society , among others . The Orange County Museum of Art took its current name in 1996.

The OCMA has mostly exhibited contemporary art over time. This included the first studies by Vija Celmins (1980), Chris Burden (1988) and Tony Cragg (1990). In addition, there were important exhibitions with the works of Lari Pittman (1983), Günther Förg (1989), Charles Ray (1990), Guillermo Kuitca (1992), Bill Viola (1997), Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle (2003), Catherine Opie ( 2006) and Mary Heilmann (2007). Modern art was also presented by the Orange County Museum of Art. These included famous artists such as Edvard Munch and Pablo Picasso . Further thematic exhibitions completed the offer.

The museum has more than 3,000 works of art, mostly contemporary and modern art . The collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, prints, videos and installations from the early 20th century to the present.

The OCMA focuses on works of California art. This includes styles such as Californian impressionism, but also items from Pop Art . Artists such as Elmer Bischoff , Jessica Bronson , Chris Burden , Vija Celmins , Helen Lundeberg , Edward Ruscha , John Baldessari , Stanton Macdonald-Wright , John McCracken , Bill Viola and many more are represented in the OCMA.
