Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County in the US state of California . It is located about 40 miles (64 km) south of the major city of Los Angeles in western southern California . Costa Mesa has 109,960 inhabitants (as of 2010). A strong growth of the population started especially after the end of the Second World War .

The urban area has a size of 40.6 km². Costa Mesa is located at the intersection of Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway) and California State Route 55 , via which the adjacent coastal city of Newport Beach on the Pacific Ocean can be reached. The city is also the northern terminus of California State Route 73 . Costa Mesa has 26 parks, a public golf course, 26 schools and 2 libraries, a college and two universities ( National University (California) , Vanguard University of Southern California ).

The city is known for its cultural diversity with an annual summer fair ( Orange County Fair ). Part of the Orange County Fair & Exposition Center is the Pacific Amphitheater , a facility used for all kinds of events.

Costa Mesa is home to the Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC), a large concert venue. The South Coast Plaza, currently the second largest shopping center in the United States, is located in the city .
