Career

Ross started in the Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach with the volleyball in the hall. She then studied at the University of Southern California . She also played for the Orange County Volleyball Club. Between 2000 and 2001 she starred in the junior national team of the USA and in 2003 she was in the squad of the senior team appointed. During this time she already collected several awards.

In 2006 Ross switched to beach volleyball. With her partner Keao Burdine she reached two ninth places on the AVP tour. At the end of the season, she was voted Rookie of the Year . She made her first attempts at the FIVB World Tour at the end of the year. With Barbra Fontana she did not get beyond the "Country Quota" in Acapulco , with Nancy Reynolds she was 17th at the Phuket Open. In 2007 she formed a duo with Jennifer Kessy . They achieved their first success at the Grand Slam in Stavanger . The team placed in 29th place defeated the Germans Goller / Ludwig in the semifinals and prevailed against the Chinese Tian Jia and Wang Jie in the final . Never before has a team ranked this low could win an FIVB tournament. Also at the Grand Slam in Berlin , Kessy / Ross came in ninth in the top ten. At the World Cup in Gstaad, however, they were eliminated as the bottom of the group after the preliminary round. They stayed in the top ten on the World Tour and were only defeated by the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana in the final of the Saint Petersburg Open . Ross has now also been voted Rookie of the Year by the FIVB.

In the World Tour 2008 Kessy / Ross started with a 17th place in Adelaide , before they finished fifth four times in a row. At the Grand Slam in Stavanger they finished third and at the Dubai Open they reached the final against their compatriots Kerri Walsh and Nicole Branagh . In November they won the last two tournaments in Phuket and Sanya . At the beginning of the 2009 season they reached two more finals in Brasília and Seoul , which they lost against the Brazilian duos Larissa / Juliana and Antonelli / Talita . At the World Cup in Stavanger they reached the quarter-finals without losing a set, which they won against Turner / Akers in the tie- break as well as the semi-finals against Ana Paula and Shelda Bede . With a final victory against Larissa / Juliana they finally became world champions. They achieved another tournament victory at the Grand Slam in Marseille against the Greek Arvaniti / Tsiartsiani . They came third in Klagenfurt and second in Åland . After an early exit in The Hague , they also achieved these placements in Barcelona and Sanya, where they lost the final against Kuhn / Zumkehr . At the end of the year they won the Phuket Open against Turner / Akers.

Kessy / Ross also successfully started the 2010 World Tour . After a fourth place in Brasília, they won both the Shanghai Open (against Larissa / Juliana) and the Grand Slam in Rome (against Goller / Ludwig). In Seoul they finished third and in Moscow they lost to the Chinese Xue Chen and Zhang Xi in the final . This was followed by two ninth and two fifth places as well as a weaker Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki . In Kristiansand , after an injury with the German duo Grün / Brink-Abeler , they made it to the semi-finals without a fight and finished fourth. They achieved other top placings as fifth in Åland and third in Sanya. In the first five tournaments of the World Tour 2011 they came third three times (Brasília, Mysłowice and Beijing ) and after a final defeat against the Dutch Keizer / van Iersel second in Shanghai. At the World Cup in Rome they had to admit defeat after winning the group and a 2-1 in the round of 16 against the Germans Holtwick / Semmler in the quarterfinals Walsh / May-Treanor. Then they won the Grand Slam in Stavanger against Goller / Ludwig. They reached another final in Stare Jabłonki, which they lost to Larissa / Juliana. They finished seventh in Åland and fifth in The Hague before finishing the year with second place in Phuket. Ross received awards from the FIVB as "Best Hitter" and "Best Server".

On the World Tour 2012 , Kessy / Ross took fifth place five times after finishing ninth in Brasília and finished third in Rome. Fourth in the Olympic rankings, they qualified for the Olympic Games in London . As group winners, they reached the semi-finals with two more wins, which they won in the tie-break against Larissa / Juliana. In a purely American final they were finally defeated by Walsh / May-Treanor and thus won the silver medal. After the Olympic tournament they were fifth in Stare Jabłonki and at the end of the year they won the Bang Saen Open against the Russians Birlowa / Ukolowa . They also won the AVP tour for the first time. At the beginning of the 2013 World Tour , Kessy / Ross finished fifth in Fuzhou and fourth in Corrientes and ninth twice. In the final of the Grand Slam in Rome they were defeated by the Brazilians Lima / Talita. For the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki Ross joined Whitney Pavlik because of an injury to Kessy . The duo only gave a set in the quarterfinals against the sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger and then had to admit defeat to the German duo Borger / Büthe in the semifinals . At the Grand Slam in Gstaad, Ross played for the first time with Kerri Walsh and finished ninth as well as with Kessy in Long Beach and Berlin. With Walsh she won the Grand Slams in São Paulo (against Ludwig / Walkenhorst ) and Xiamen (against Lima / Talita ). She completed the last tournament of the year in Phuket with Jennifer Fopma . At the AVP Tour 2013 she was awarded as MVP and with Kessy as Team of the Year.

Bronze game at the 2016 Olympic Games

At the beginning of the 2014 World Tour , Walsh / Ross won the Fuzhou Open and later the Grand Slams in Moscow, Stavanger and Long Beach. The other tournaments they finished in fifth or ninth place. They achieved their first overall victory together at the AVP Tour. In the 2015 season , Walsh was somewhat restricted due to a shoulder injury. After finishing third in Fuzhou, she missed the top ten of an FIVB tournament at the Grand Slam in Moscow for the second time in her career. At the World Cup in the Netherlands , Walsh / Ross survived the group phase and the first knockout game unbeaten, but had to admit defeat to Chinese Wang Fan and Yue Yuan in the round of 16 . They finished fourth at the Major in Gstaad and Ross achieved the same result with Fopma at the Grand Slam in Yokohama . Walsh / Ross then played their only final in 2015 in the FIVB series in Long Beach, where they lost to Larissa / Talita. The World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale played Ross with Lauren Fendrick and finished fifth. The World Tour 2016 opened Walsh / Ross winning the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro . They later won the Open tournaments in Fuzhou and Cincinnati and the Grand Slam in Moscow. At the Gstaad Major they were again defeated by Larissa / Talita. As the best team in the Olympic ranking, Walsh / Ross qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . As group winners, they reached the semi-finals with two more victories. There they had to admit defeat to the Brazilians Ágatha / Bárbara . Walsh / Ross won the bronze medal match against the second Brazilian duo Larissa / Talita . They then won the Grand Slam in Long Beach and finished fifth at the season finale in Toronto .

Due to differences regarding the US AVP tour, Walsh and Ross split up in the spring of 2017. Ross has since played alongside Lauren Fendrick . At the World Cup in Vienna , Fendrick / Ross reached the final, which they lost to the German Olympic champions Ludwig / Walkenhorst . Alexandra Klineman has been April Ross' partner since 2018 .
