FIVB Women's World Tour 2011

The women's FIVB World Tour 2011 consisted of 15 beach volleyball tournaments, six of which were held as a grand slam and eight as an open . In addition, there were the World Championships , which took place in Rome from June 13th to 19th .

Tournaments

The series began on April 18th in Brasília and ended on November 6th on Phuket Island in Thailand. There were other Open in Sanya , Shanghai , Mysłowice , Québec , Åland and The Hague . Beijing , Stavanger , Gstaad , Moscow , Stare Jabłonki and Klagenfurt hosted the Grand Slams. The originally planned event in Kristiansand has been canceled.

Brasilia Open (April 18-23)

Also this year the tour started in the capital of Brazil . In the German Country Quota , Karla Borger and Britta Büthe first defeated Geeske Banck / Anja Günther and then Stefanie Hüttermann / Anni Schumacher before the tournament was over for them in the first round of qualification. In the main draw, Julia Sude and Jana Köhler lost their first two games. Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler won the first round, but then lost to number two seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang . After the victory over the Russians Ryabova / Ushkova, the runner-up European champions of the previous year ended against the reigning world champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross . The two then defeated the Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger , who came in seventh after three wins and two defeats. Of the German couples, only Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig survived the first three rounds undefeated. After that, however, they lost against the top seeded Larissa and Juliana and then against Fendrick and Hanson, finishing in fifth place. In the semifinals, Larissa and Juliana defeated the Americans Kessy / Ross, while the double Olympic champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor prevailed against their compatriots Fendrick / Hanson. The reigning world champions won the game for third place, while the double world champions lost to the South Americans in their first joint tournament in the world series after Walsh's baby break in the final. Like last year, Larissa and Juliana are the first gold medal winners of the FIVB Tour 2011.

Sanya Open (April 26th to May 1st)

Angelina Grün and Rieke Brink-Abeler defeated Geeske Banck / Anja Günther and then Karla Borger / Britta Büthe in the German Country Quota . In the first round of the qualification the nine-time indoor volleyball player of the year and her partner had a bye, in the second round they defeated the Spaniards Campisi / Hopf. Then came the end against the Dutch Van der Hoeven and Van der Vlis. Number four seeded Goller and Ludwig lost their first two games. After their first round defeat against Walsh and May-Treanor and after their victory over their German compatriots Holtwick and Semmler, who had also lost their second game, Julia Sude and Jana Köhler were the only German couple to still be in the competition after two matches. However, they were subsequently defeated by Kessy / Ross. The Austrian Schweiger sisters did better, winning the following five games after their defeat in the first round, then being defeated by Walsh and May-Treanor and taking fifth place in the overall ranking. The American world and Olympic champions had to give up due to injury to the Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi, who had to admit defeat to Larissa and Juliana in the final. The bronze medal was secured by Talita and Antonelli without a fight.

Shanghai Open (May 3rd to 8th)

In the third tournament of the season, Grün and Brink-Abeler first won over Borger and Büthe, then lost to Geeske Banck and Anja Günther, who received a bye in the first round of the main qualification but lost their next game. As in Sanya, Holtwick and Semmler could not win their first two games this time. As in the previous event, Köhler and Sude were only able to win one of their first three encounters and ended up in 17th place. Goller and Ludwig, who lost their next two games after two wins, were ninth. Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, who had defeated the best German team in the third winning round, did better. After their defeat against Fendrick and Hanson, the Austrians eliminated the number one Brazilian Larissa and Juliana. Another European couple also made it to the semi-finals. Mysłowice Open (May 17-22)

Larissa and Juliana, leading in the world rankings, withdrew their entry for the tournament in Poland, Misty May-Treanor had to cancel due to injury. Therefore, Kerri Walsh competed with Brittany Hochevar . The two survived the qualification and fought for seventh place in the main competition after three wins and two defeats. In the German country quota and in the first qualifying round, Banck and Günther received a bye. After winning the next game, they lost to the Brazilians Renata and read Lima. Karla Borger and Britta Büthe first defeated their compatriots Hüttermann and Schumacher. After three more successes, they reached the main field, where they, like Jana Köhler and Julia Sude, lost their first encounter, then won twice and, after defeats in the following round, finished thirteenth. The Swiss Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr , who had defeated Köhler and Sude, failed in the round of 16 against the Austrians Stefanie and Doris Schwaiger. Grand Slam in Beijing (June 6th to 11th)

A German country quota was not necessary, as the Banck / Günther initially registered did not start and Brink-Abeler / Grün received a wildcard for the main field. For example, only Borger / Büthe of the couples from the Federal Republic had to qualify, and they survived without defeat. After their only success in the group phase over Köhler / Sude, who ended the tournament without a win, they defeated the ten seeded Cunha / Lima from Brazil in the first round. Then they failed in the second round to Kuhn and Zumkehr from Switzerland. The Swiss then lost to May-Treanor / Walsh in the quarter-finals and finished in fifth place. Preliminary round in the pool system

Brink-Abeler / Grün won 2-1 against the Canadians Lessard / Martin in the capital of Italy, but due to their 0-2 defeats against their German rivals Holtwick and Semmler and Lima / Vivien from Brazil they only had one set quotient when they were third in the group of 0.400, which meant the end. Banck / Günther did better with just a 2-1 win against Wesselink / Meppelink from the Netherlands and the 1: 2 against Goller / Ludwig and the 0: 2 against Bawden / Palmer from Australia. This meant a rate quotient of 0.600 and thus progress. With two wins each, the other German pairings reached the round of the best 32. Köhler / Sude defeated Orsi Toth / Benazzi from Italy and Kadijk R.-Mooren from the Netherlands with 2-0 sets, before they beat the top seeded Larissa and Juliana with 0 : 2 lost. After the success over their German opponents, Goller / Ludwig lost to the Australians in their pool with 0: 2, but then defeated the Dutch with 2: 1. Holtwick / Semmler won the match against the Canadians 2-0 in addition to the domestic German duel, but they lost against the Brazilians with the same set result. Kuhn and Zumkehr defeated the British Mullin / Dampney 2-0 and the Mexicans Candelas / Garcia 2-1. Then the Swiss lost to the Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi with 1: 2 and reached the first main round as did the Austrian Schwaiger sisters after 2-0 victories over Y. Huang / Yue Y. from China and the Australians Cook / West and one 0-2 defeat against Arvaniti / Tsiartsiani from Greece. The Austrians Hansel / Montagnoli were only fourth in their pool, although they had defeated the second Swiss duo Graessli / Goricanec 2-1, but had the worst point quotient in the games of three teams with only one success. The Swiss, on the other hand, qualified third in the group for the next round.

Main round

Banck and Günther said goodbye to the tournament with a 2-0 defeat against Xue / Zhang Xi, who then defeated Cicolari / Menegatti and the two seeded Talita / Antonelli. In the semifinals Larissa and Juliana were able to prevail against the Central Europeans. The other semi-finals were won by the double world champions Walsh and May-Treanor, who had previously eliminated the reigning world champions Kessy and A. Ross in the US duel, against Xue / Zhang Xi. The Chinese then prevailed in the game for third place. Larissa and Juliana won the gold medal at a World Cup for the first time after their 2-1 victory over Walsh and May-Treanor.

Grand Slam in Stavanger (June 27th to July 2nd)

In the German Country Quota Borger / Büthe won against Banck / Günther, while Köhler / Sude prevailed against Hüttermann / Schumacher. Both winning teams survived the first qualifying round, the subsequent domestic German duel won Julia Sude and Jana Köhler, who survived the group phase, but failed in the first main round as did Schwaiger / Schwaiger from Austria. Their compatriots Hansel / Montagnolli, who first defeated Kuhn / Zumkehr from Switzerland and then the Germans Holtwick / Semmler, but were defeated by the Brazilian world champions in the quarter-finals, did better. Goller / Ludwig remained undefeated in their pool and then prevailed against Maria Clara and Carol. Then Arvaniti / Tsiartsiani were defeated as well as Larissa and Juliana in the semifinals. In the final, the two Germans met Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, who had previously prevailed against Keizer / Van Iersel. Grand Slam in Gstaad (July 4th to 9th)

In the German preliminary round, Hüttermann / Schumacher won against Banck / Günther and then lost against Borger / Büthe, who also successfully completed the qualification. The four remaining German teams all survived the group stage, but lost their first game in the main round. Goller / Ludwig failed in round 1 as did Köhler / Sude. Borger / Büthe and Holtwick / Semmler, as winners of their pool, only had to compete in the round of 16 and could not finish their games victoriously there either. The Austrian pairs Hansel / Montagnolli and Schwaiger / Schwaiger also lost their first game of the main round and finished 17th in the overall ranking. Nadine Zumkehr and Simone Kuhn won their preliminary group and their second round, but were subsequently defeated by Larissa and Juliana, who also defeated Cicolari / Menegatti in the semifinals. The world champions won the final against Xue / Zhang Xi, who had previously eliminated Talita and Antonelli. The Brazilians also lost the small final against the Italians.

Grand Slam in Moscow (July 11th to 16th)

Borger / Büthe survived qualification with two wins, while the two Austrian couples were eliminated. In the group phase, all four German couples as well as the Swiss couple Kuhn / Zumkehr qualified for the main round, Goller / Ludwig as group first even qualified directly for round two. In lap one Köhler / Sude, Holtwick / Semmler and Borger / Büthe ended, while Kuhn / Zumkehr moved in in lap two. Both Goller / Ludwig and Kuhn / Zumkehr reached the quarter-finals, where after defeats against the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana and the Italians Cicolari / Menegatti the end came. Tournament winners were the US-Americans May-Treanor / Walsh after a 2-0 win in the final over Larissa / Juliana. Third place went to the Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi with a 2-1 win over Cicolari / Menegatti.

Québec Open (July 18-24)

After separating from Anja Günther, Geeske Banck started with Christine Aulenbrock. The only German couple won their opening game, but lost the two following matches as did Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger from Austria. No duo from Switzerland competed in Canada. Three Brazilian couples reached the semifinals. Talita / Antonelli initially eliminated their compatriots Lima / Vivien and then won the final against the Salgado sisters who had defeated Liliana / Baquerizo in the other semifinals. The Spanish women also lost the game for the bronze medal.

Mazuri Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki (July 25th to 30th)

Banck / Aulenbrock defeated Brink-Abeler / Grün in their second joint FIVB tournament in the German preliminary round, but were then defeated by Borger / Büthe, who survived the qualification and the group phase as in Moscow. In the domestic duel they then beat Köhler / Sude, while Holtwick / Semmler also won their game in the first main round and Goller / Ludwig came first in the second round. The Schwaiger sisters from Austria were eliminated from their pool as well as the Swiss Heidrich / Forrer, whose compatriots Kuhn / Zumkehr failed in the first main round. Of the German couples, only Holtwick / Semmler reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to Talita / Antonelli. Other duos in the semifinals were the Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi, the reigning world champions and Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, who had eliminated their US compatriots May-Treanor / Walsh in the duel between the ex-world titleholders. While the athletes from the United States defeated Antonelli and Talita, their compatriots Larissa and Juliana prevailed against the Asians and also won the final. Antonelli and Talita had the upper hand in the battle for third place.

Grand Slam in Klagenfurt (August 1st to 6th)

After their success in the German country quota over Banck / Günther, Borger / Büthe failed in the second qualifying round. In the main competition, Holtwick / Semmler and the Austrian team Rimser / Pichler were the last of their pools to be eliminated. In the first main round, their compatriots Hansel / Montagnoli were defeated by the Americans Fendrick / Hanson, while Köhler / Sude were defeated by the Swiss Kuhn / Zumkehr. In addition, Goller / Ludwig from German-speaking countries reached the second round after their victory over the Greek Arvaniti / Tsiartsiani and the Schwaiger sisters from Austria who qualified as first in the group. However, all three duos lost their next games. In the semifinals, Xue / Zhang Xi met Talita / Antonelli and May-Treanor / Walsh met Keizer / Van Iersel. While the Asians defeated the South Americans, the Americans prevailed against the Europeans and also defeated the Chinese in the final. Third place went to the Dutch women after their victory over the Brazilians.

Åland Open (August 15th to 20th)

Geeske Banck and Katharina Schillerwein defeated their former partner Anja Günther in the German qualifying, who formed a duo with Melanie Gernert . The winners then eliminated Hüttermann / Schumacher before they were eliminated in the second qualifying round. Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger did not survive the qualification either. Hansel / Montagnoli won the following two games after their opening defeat in the main field and finished thirteenth. The remaining three German and the only Swiss duo won their first games. While Kuhn / Zumkehr and Holtwick / Semmler lost their subsequent encounters and took seventeenth place overall, Köhler / Sude and Goller / Ludwig also won their second game. Both teams lost in the third round, then won their first match in the loser round and faced each other in the following game. Jana Köhler and Julia Sude were able to prevail in this domestic German duel, but lost in the fight for entry into the semifinals against May-Treanor / Walsh, who then also defeated Talita / Antonelli and only lost to Xue / Zhang Xi in the final. Larissa and Juliana, who had been defeated by the Chinese in the semifinals, beat Antonelli and Talita in the Brazilian duel for the bronze medal.

The Hague Open (23-28 August)

Because of the national championships taking place at the same time, there were no German couples at the start. The Swiss Kayser / Heidrich and Graessli / Goricanec failed in the qualification as did the Austrian duos Rimser / Swoboda and Teufl / Klopf. Their compatriots Hansel / Montagnolli won a game in the main competition. That was enough for seventeenth place. The Swiss Kuhn / Zumkehr won their first two games. After two defeats in the two following matches, the beach volleyball players from the Alpine republic finished ninth in the overall ranking. The four top seeded teams met in the semifinals. May-Treanor / Walsh defeated Antonelli / Talita, while Xue / Zhang Xi failed to Larissa and Juliana. The Brazilian duo won the final and the match for third place.

Thailand Open (November 1st to 6th)

At the last event of the year the overall winners Larissa / Juliana were missing as well as the second May-Treanor / Walsh. Swiss teams did not start, the only Austrians Hansel / Montagnolli won a game in the main field and finished in seventeenth place. Of the two German couples who started, Hüttermann and Schillerwein failed in the second qualifying round, while Jana Köhler and Julia Sude were seeded.
