FIVB Women's World Tour 2012

The women's FIVB World Tour 2012 consisted of twelve beach volleyball tournaments, eight of which were held as a grand slam and four as an open .

Tournaments

The series began on April 15 in Brasília and ended on October 28 in Bang Saen , Thailand. There were other Open in Sanya and Åland . Shanghai , Beijing , Moscow , Rome , Gstaad , Berlin , Klagenfurt and Stare Jabłonki hosted the Grand Slams. Another originally planned event in Québec has been canceled.

Brasilia Open (April 15th to 20th)

As in the last three years, the tour started this time in the capital of Brazil . In the German Country Quota , Karla Borger and Britta Büthe defeated Victoria Bieneck and Julia Großner and then prevailed in the qualification. In contrast, the Swiss Heidrich / Kayer failed in the preliminary round. Their compatriots Kuhn / Zumkehr won three times after their opening defeat in the main competition and finished ninth in the overall ranking. The only Austrian starters Hansel and Montagnolli lost their first two games, as did the Germans Geeske Banck and Julia Sude . Borger / Büthe, like Semmler / Holtwick, went one round and finished seventeenth. The best German team were Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig , who were only defeated by Cicolari / Menegatti in the match for the semi-finals . The Italians then lost to Talita / Antonelli , while the reigning world champions Juliana / Larissa failed to Xue / Zhang Xi . The Chinese secured the gold medal in the final, Cicolari / Menegatti came third.

Sanya Open (April 24-29)

Victoria Bieneck and Julia Großner defeated Chantal Laboureur and Christine Aulenbrock in the German preliminary round, but then failed in the second qualifying round like Stefanie Hüttermann and Katharina Schillerwein . The same thing happened to the Swiss Kayser / Heidrich. In the main draw, Köhler / Sude lost their first two games, while Borger / Büthe achieved seventeenth place thanks to a match they won together with the Swiss Goricanec / Graessli. After winning two games at the beginning, both their compatriots Kuhn / Zumkehr and the Austrian Schwaiger sisters lost their third and fourth game and finished ninth each time. Montagnolli / Hansel placed even better, who only lost in the fourth round and reached the semi-finals with another victory, which they lost against Talita and Antonelli from Brazil. In the other semifinals, Larissa and Juliana prevailed against the number one Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi. While the Asians secured the bronze medal in the encounter with the Europeans, the reigning world champions had to admit defeat to their compatriots in the final.

Grand Slam in Shanghai (April 30th to May 5th)

After their victory over Bieneck / Großner, Anja Günther and Melanie Gernert lost in the first round of the main qualification, as did the Swiss pairing Goricanec / Graessli. In contrast, both Austrian teams made it into the round of the best 32 teams. While Montagnolli / Hansel could not win their three group games, Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger reached the quarter-finals after their second place in the pool with two more wins, where they were defeated by the top seeded Chinese. Of the German pairs, Borger / Büthe met Goller / Ludwig in the group encounters, who were defeated in this game, but, unlike their defeats, survived the first main round. The two Hamburg women lost the following encounter, however, as did Zumkehr / Kuhn from Switzerland and Holtwick / Semmler, who were the first in their pool to be placed directly for the second round. After Xue / Zhang Xi had defeated the sisters from the Alpine republic, they also won against Larissa and Juliana and secured the gold medal against Talita and Antonelli, who had previously been successful against Keizer / Van Iersel , in the final, as in Brasilia . Grand Slam in Beijing (May 7th to 12th)

As in Shanghai, Günther / Gernert were able to prevail against Bieneck / Großner in the Chinese capital, then won the second game in the German Country Quota against Borger / Büthe, only to lose 2 sets 0: 2 in the first qualifying round. The Swiss Forrer / Vergé-Dépré did not survive the preliminary round either. Her compatriots Goricanec / Graessli and the Austrians Schwaiger / Schwaiger did better. In Pool C of the main competition, both couples met with the better end for the Swiss, for whom the first round after the group games meant the end of the line as well as for Hansel / Montagnolli and Köhler / Sude, while Kuhn / Zumkehr fought their way into the round of 16, but lost there. As the winners of their pool, the two remaining German couples qualified for the round of the last sixteen teams and won their encounters. Then Goller / Ludwig lost to Larissa and Juliana. In contrast, Holtwick / Semmler defeated their Belgian rivals, but also lost to the reigning world champions and then the game for third place against the Dutch Keizer / Van Irsel. They had previously suffered a significant defeat in the European semifinals against Cicolari-Menegatti. In the final, the Brazilians secured the gold medal by beating the Italians.

Grand Slam in Moscow (June 6th to 11th)

While Bieneck / Großner failed in the subsequent qualification after their victory in the German preliminary round over Banck / Walkenhorst, Borger / Büthe were able to fight their way into the main field, but lost all three games in the pool phase. The first round after that was the end of the line for the Austrian qualifiers Hansel / Montagnolli, their compatriots Schwaiger / Schwaiger and the Swiss women Zumkehr / Kuhn, while the two best German teams Goller / Ludwick and Holtwick / Semmler reached the round of 16. The number one Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi lived up to their role as favorites and, after their success in the semifinals over Talita / Antonelli, also defeated the former world champions Walsh / May-Treanor, who had previously defeated their successors. Larissa and Juliana prevailed in the Brazilian duel for the bronze medal.

Grand Slam in Rome (June 12th to 17th)

Banck / Walkenhorst defeated Gernert / Günther and Borger / Büthe won against Bieneck / Großner in the German pre-qualifications. As in Moscow, the duo starting for MTV Stuttgart was able to prevail afterwards. In contrast to the tournament in the Russian capital, Karla Borger and Britta Büthe won all games in their preliminary group and then also their round of 16, which Holtwick / Semmler lost to the Austrian Schwaiger sisters. They were subsequently defeated by Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig, who had previously eliminated the reigning world champions and defeated the former world title winners Kessy / Ross in the semifinals. Again, the Germans could not win the final. The Swiss Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr secured the gold medal. The Italians Cicolari / Menegatti, who lost to them in the semifinals, also lost the small final against the Americans.

Grand Slam in Gstaad (July 2nd to 7th)

In the country quota, Banck / Walkenhorst prevailed against Bieneck / Großner and Schumacher / Köhler . They also prevailed in the qualification and played together with Borger / Büthe , Semmler / Holtwick and Goller / Ludwig in the main round. For Banck / Walkenhorst the end was reached with the last place in the pool round. While Goller / Ludwig were able to qualify directly for the second round, Holtwick / Semmler and Borger / Büthe had to play in the first round, but were able to prevail there. All three German teams then failed in the second round and thus all finished ninth. In the final, May-Treanor / Walsh beat Keizer / Van Iersel 2-0.

Grand Slam in Berlin (July 11th to 15th)

The Grand Slam took place in Berlin for the first time in the Waldbühne . Bieneck / Großner , Aulenbrock / Laboreur and Banck / Walkenhorst were able to prevail in the country quota and played in the qualification. Only Bieneck / Großner managed to move into the automatically qualified Goller / Ludwig , Holtwick / Semmler , Borger / Büthe and Köhler / Schumacher . Borger / Büthe finished the group stage of the main round with three defeats and ended up in 25th place. In the first round, Bieneck / Großner lost to the Italians Gioria / Momoli with 1: 2 and took 17th place. Goller / Ludwig and Köhler / Schumacher ended up in ninth place after being eliminated in the second round. After a 2-1 win over the Australian duo Cook / Hinchley, Holtwick / Semmler lost 2-1 in the semifinals to the Chinese Xue / Zhang Xi and ended up in fourth place after a 2-0 defeat by Cicolari / Menegatti (ITA) . In the final, the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana beat Xue / Zhang Xi 2-0.

Grand Slam in Klagenfurt (July 16-21)

Due to the short-term cancellation of Holtwick / Semmler , only two German teams were in the main field in Klagenfurt with Goller / Ludwig and Borger / Büthe . In the country quota, Gernert / Günther were able to secure a place in the qualification against Banck / Großner and Köhler / Schumacher against Mersmann / Tillmann . However, only Köhler / Schumacher managed to qualify for the main field, but after surviving the group phase they were eliminated together with Borger / Büthe in the first round and thus achieved 17th place. In the second round, Goller / Ludwig were defeated by the Dutch team Keizer / Van Iersel with 1: 2 and thus finished ninth for the fifth time on the World Tour this year. In the final, the Russian team Chomjakowa / Ukolowa defeated the duo Meppelink / van Gestel from the Netherlands 2-1.

Mazuri Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki (August 13th to 18th)

A total of six German teams had registered for the first tournament after the Olympic Games . Goller / Ludwig had stopped here in order to concentrate on the German championships in Timmendorfer Strand.

In the country quota, both Banck / Walkenhorst prevailed against Laboreur / Hüttermann and Bieneck / Großner against Mersmann / Tillmann 2-0. Both teams were also successful in qualifying and played together with Holtwick / Semmler and Borger / Büthe in the main field. Bieneck / Großner retired with three defeats in the group stage. The other three German duos reached the first place in their groups directly in the round of 16. However, only Holtwick / Semmler were able to prevail there. They met Kessy / A. Ross in the quarter-finals and were also successful here with 2-1. After the 1: 2 defeat against Larissa / Juliana in the semifinals, they were then successful in the game for third place with 2: 1 against Chomjakowa / Ukolowa . Larissa / Juliana won the final 2-0 against Cicolari / Menegatti .

Åland Open (August 28th to September 2nd)

At the penultimate tournament of the 2012 World Tour, the German champions Holtwick / Semmler and Köhler / Schumacher were seeded for the main draw. In the country quota, Bieneck / Großner had prevailed against Hüttermann / Laboreur and played together with the duo Banck / Walkenhorst in the qualification. Both teams were able to qualify for the main draw. Köhler / Schumacher ended the tournament with a 2-0 defeat against the Schwaiger sisters (AUT) in 17th place. Bieneck / Großner were defeated by the Banck / Walkenhorst team with 0: 2 and finished in 13th place. In the next round Banck / Walkenhorst had to admit defeat to the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana and ended the tournament in seventh place. Holtwick / Semmler won the tournament with a 2-1 victory in the final against the Spanish duo Liliana / Baquerizo .

Thailand Open (October 23-28)

Four German teams competed at the end of the season of the World Tour of the year. With the Olympic ninth and for the first time on the tour, Holtwick / Semmler , Bieneck / Großner and Banck / Hüttermann , three teams were seeded for the main field. Krebs / Laboreur were able to prevail in the qualification and thus also played in the main field. There was already a German duel in the first round, in which Banck / Hüttermann were successful against Bieneck / Großner. Krebs / Laboreur lost to the four seeded Russians Vosakowa / Wassina. You played with it together with Bieneck / Großner in the losers round. Both lost again and finished 25th. Both Holtwick / Semmler and Banck / Hüttermann lost to their opponents in the second round.
