Madelein Meppelink (born November 29, 1989 in Rhenen ) is a Dutch beach volleyball player . She became European Champion in 2014 and 2018 and took part in the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016.

Career

Meppelink finished 17th at the U19 World Cup in Mysłowice in 2007 with Linda Haandrikman . In the same year she was fifth with Margo Wiltens at the U21 World Cup in Modena . In 2008 Meppelink / Wiltens played the satellite tournament in Vaduz and came fifth in a Challenger tournament in Egypt . In 2009, after two Masters tournaments, they came ninth at the Zagreb Satellite and fifth at the Challenger tournament in Cyprus . Then they played their first open tournaments on the FIVB World Tour in Stare Jabłonki and The Hague . At the U21 World Cup in Blackpool , Meppelink finished fifth with Sophie van Gestel . At the last open tournaments of the year in Sanya and Phuket she played for the first time with Marloes Wesselink .

On the World Tour 2010 Meppelink / Wesselink came fifth in the Grand Slam in Stavanger for the first time in the top ten. At the EM in Berlin they reached the second round of the group, which they won against the Swiss duo Kuhn / Zumkehr ; in the quarterfinals they then had to admit defeat to later tournament winners Goller / Ludwig . At the subsequent The Hague Open they also finished fifth and in Montpellier they won the Continental Cup. In the preliminary round of the 2011 World Cup in Rome , Meppelink / Wesselink only won two sets and were eliminated as the bottom of the group. On the World Tour 2011 they didn't get any top placements; their only top ten result came in third at the CEV Masters in Niechorze .

Meppelink at the 2012 Olympics

At the following Grand Slam in Klagenfurt , Meppelink formed a new duo with Sophie van Gestel . Meppelink / van Gestel started the 2012 season with a seventh place in Brasília and finished ninth in the Grand Slam in Beijing . In second place in the group they reached the knockout round of the European Championship in Scheveningen , where they won the Dutch duel against Sinnema / Wesselink as well as the round of 16 against the Germans Holtwick / Semmler ; in the quarterfinals, the preliminary round match against the Czechs Háječková / Klapalová and Meppelink / van Gestel lost again after three sets. They finished the next Grand Slams in Moscow and Gstaad in fifth and ninth; in Klagenfurt they were only subject to the Russians Ukolowa / Birlowa in the final . They qualified for the Olympic Games in London via the World Cup . There they came through the playoff round of the group third in the round of 16, which they lost against the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana ; thus they finished the Olympic tournament in ninth place. Meppelink also became Dutch champion in 2012.

At the beginning of 2013, Meppelink / van Gestel won the final of the satellite tournament in Antalya against the German Ludwig / Walkenhorst . Two fourth places followed on the 2013 World Tour at the Fuzhou Open and the Grand Slam in Shanghai . Then they won the Grand Slam in Corrientes in the final against Maria Antonelli and Ágatha Bednarczuk , with which they achieved their first tournament victory on the World Tour. They finished ninth in The Hague and fifth in Rome. At the World Cup in Stare Jabłonki they won their preliminary group, but then lost the first knockout game against Ukolowa / Birlowa in the tie-break. At the EM in Klagenfurt they came second in the group to the round of 16 and lost to the Greek Arvaniti / Karagkouni . There was another ninth place at the end of the season in São Paulo . Meppelink has played with Marleen van Iersel since the beginning of 2014 . At the beginning of the 2014 World Tour , Meppelink / van Iersel finished ninth in Fuzhou and fifth in Shanghai, and they also finished fourth at the CEV Masters in Baden . At the European Championships in Quartu Sant'Elena they won their preliminary group as well as the second round against Holtwick / Semmler and the quarter-finals against Menegatti / Orsi Toth , before they prevailed in the semifinals after three sets against Bieneck / Großner . With a final victory against the Swiss Goricanec / Hüberli , they finally became European champions. They also remained successful on the World Tour as third in Moscow , ninth in Berlin and fourth in Stavanger . After two weaker results, two fifth and one ninth place followed, and finally a third place in São Paulo.

At the first tournaments of the World Tour 2015 , Meppelink / van Iersel were in the final twice; in Lucerne they were defeated by the German duo Borger / Büthe and in Moscow by the Brazilians Larissa / Talita . They finished third at the major tournament in Stavanger. At the World Cup in the Netherlands , they remained unbeaten in the preliminary round and the first knockout game before they lost the round of 16 against the Australians Bawden / Clancy . They finished the Grand Slam in Yokohama in fifth place. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt , the defending champions had to admit defeat to the Slovak duo Dubovcová / Nestarcová as group winners in the round of 16 . They reached their next final at the Grand Slam in Olsztyn , where Larissa / Talita were again too strong. Then Meppelink / van Iersel finished third in Rio de Janeiro and fifth at the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale . At the start of 2016 , they missed winning the tournament in Maceió by losing to the Brazilians Eduarda Lisboa and Elize Maia . They then finished fifth in Fortaleza and ninth in Rio and Moscow. At the EM in Biel / Bienne they won their preliminary round matches and the Dutch round of 16 against van Gestel / van der Vlist and were eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Czechs Sluková / Hermannová . At the Hamburg Major and the Grand Slam in Olsztyn they also came in fifth and in Gstaad they came fourth. Meppelink / van Iersel qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio as the fourth best team in the Olympic rankings . There they reached the second round in the group, which they lost in the tiebreak against the Swiss Heidrich / Zumkehr . Thus, they finished ninth.

In 2017 Meppelink played again alongside Sophie van Gestel . In 2018, Sanne Keizer is her partner, with whom she became European champion in her home country .
