Ágatha Bednarczuk (born June 22, 1983 in Curitiba ) is a Brazilian beach volleyball and former volleyball player .

She became world champion in 2015 and won the Olympic silver medal in 2016 .

Career

Ágatha began playing indoor volleyball in 1992 and initially played in Paranaguá . She later worked at Banestado Londrina and Paulistano São Paulo . In 2001 she played beach volleyball for the first time. On the national Brazilian tour she competed with Bruna in 2003 and with Andréa Teixeira the following year .

In 2005 Ágatha formed a duo with Sandra Pires . On the FIVB World Tour , Ágatha and Sandra Pires achieved fifth place each in their first open tournaments in Shanghai and Milan . At the World Cup in Berlin they lost their opening game against the Chinese Li Ying / Wang Lu , before they managed two wins in the losing round and then eliminated against the German Lahme / Müsch . After the World Cup, they played their first joint Grand Slam in Stavanger and achieved their best result in fourth at the Saint Petersburg Open. In 2006 Ágatha played with Shaylyn Bede , but she only reached the peloton on the World Tour at the Grand Slam in Gstaad . At the beginning of the 2007 season, Ágatha / Shaylyn were eliminated twice early and later often again missed the main draw because they were defeated in the "Country Quota". As seventh of the Marseille Open, they came into the top ten for the first time. They finished the year 13th in Fortaleza and the same result came in 2008 in Osaka . At the last tournament of the year in Guarujá they were in the final of an FIVB tournament for the first time, which they lost to their compatriots Larissa França and Vivian Cunha .

After a year break, Ágatha returned to the World Tour in 2010 with Raquel Pellucci . The duo could only achieve a top placement as a finalist of the satellite tournament in Cyprus . In 2011, Ágatha played with her new partner Bárbara Seixas on the national tour before she returned to the World Tour in 2012 . Ágatha / Bárbara reached the top ten for the first time as fifth in the Grand Slam in Gstaad. In Stare Jabłonki and Åland respectively occupied ninth place before the end of October in Bang Saen came to third place. After winning the Brazilian championship, Ágatha / Bárbara separated to compete in new formations for the 2013 World Tour .

Ágatha formed a duo with Maria Antonelli . Three of the first four FIVB tournaments ended with Ágatha / Antonelli in fifth place and at the Grand Slam in Corrientes they reached the final, in which they were defeated by the Dutch Meppelink / van Gestel . At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki , they got into the first knockout round without losing a set, where they were eliminated against the Chinese Xue Chen and Zhang Xi . After that, they were consistently in the top ten on the World Tour. They finished third in São Paulo and fourth in their last tournament together in Phuket .

Since 2014 Ágatha played again with Bárbara. After a ninth place in Fuzhou and a third place in Shanghai, Ágatha / Bárbara won the Puerto Vallarta Open against Juliana and Antonelli. In the following Grand Slams there was a ninth and four fifth places. In Long Beach they had to admit defeat to the US duo Walsh / Ross in the final. With the exception of the Grand Slam in São Paulo, they always achieved top ten placements on the 2014 World Tour . In 2015 they won the Prague Open against Canadians Pavan / Bansley . In Stavanger and Saint Petersburg they played again against Juliana / Antonelli and prevailed in Russia. At the World Cup in the Netherlands , Ágatha / Bárbara won their preliminary group and two duels against Canadian duos. In the semifinals they defeated Juliana / Antonelli; They also won the Brazilian duel in the final against Taiana Lima and Fernanda Berti Alves and became world champions. After a fifth place in Gstaad, they had to admit defeat to the German duo Ludwig / Walkenhorst in the Yokohama final . They also came second in Rio de Janeiro after losing to Larissa / Talita . They took third place at the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale . At the end of the season they were named World Tour Champion 2015 .

At the start of the 2016 tour , they finished third in Maceió and fifth in Rio de Janeiro. After they had to be content with 17th place in Moscow, they reached the final of the Hamburg Major, which they lost to Ludwig / Walkenhorst. After that there were two ninth places. As world champions, Ágatha / Bárbara were qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio . After a defeat in the last group game, they came second in the group and qualified for the semi-finals against Walsh / Ross without losing any further set. They defeated the US defending champion and her partner 2-1, but then lost the final against the Germans Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst 0-2. Subsequently, Ágatha and Bárbara separated.

Since 2017, Ágatha has been playing with Eduarda Santos Lisboa ("Duda"), who is fifteen years younger . At the FIVB World Tour , the two Brazilians had numerous medal placements. At the World Cup in Vienna they were eliminated in the first main round against the Czechs Hermannová / Sluková .
