Sandra Pires Tavares (born June 16, 1973 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a former Brazilian beach volleyball player , Olympic champion and world champion.
Career
After a fourth place in the FIVB World Tour in 1993 with Karina Lins e Silva, Sandra Pires started in 1994 with Jackie Silva in the AVP Tour with three wins in fourteen tournaments. From 1995 to 1997 the two Brazilians won twelve of 29 FIVB tournaments, came second six times, took third place in ten events and did not receive a medal only once, but at least reached the semi-finals. In 1995 and 1996 Pires / Silva also became FIVB Tour Champion. Her greatest successes, however, were winning the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and a year later the world championship title in Los Angeles .
In 1998 Adriana Samuel Ramos and Sandra Pires became a beach team. After two FIVB successes in 1998, the two South Americans were able to secure the bronze medal at the following Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 . A year later, Pires and Tatiana Minello won the silver medal at the World Championships in Klagenfurt . The collaboration with Leila Barros in 2002 was not quite as successful , several fifth places were the best placements at FIVB tournaments. At the first seven tournaments in 2003, Sandra Pires and her new partner Ana Paula Henkel achieved four first and three second places; at the end of the season, the two were FIVB Tour Champion of the year. In the last tournament in 2004, the two Brazilians won their last joint FIVB gold medal in their home country, which was also the last time a place on the podium at an international tournament in Sandra Pires' career.
