Leila Barros (born September 30, 1971 in Brasilia, DF ) is a former Brazilian volleyball and beach volleyball player and politician ( PSB ). Between 2015 and 2018 she was Minister of Sport for the Federal District of Brasília .
Sports career hall
Leila Barros started playing indoor volleyball when she was fifteen . In 1994 she became vice world champion with the Brazilian national team . The Brazilian also achieved second place with her team at the 1995 World Grand Prix . In 1996 and 1998 she even got the gold medal at this event and was named Most Valuable Player . In 1999 it was enough for the silver medal again and in 2000 Leila Barros stood on the podium for the fifth time after winning the bronze medal at a Grand Prix. The medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney were of the same color .
Sports career beach
Leila started her beach volleyball career in 2001. In 2002 she played several tournaments on the FIVB World Tour with Sandra Pires . In 2003 the partner was Mônica Rodrigues and from 2004 to 2007 Ana Paula Connelly and Leila Barros formed a team. The two achieved ninth place at the 2005 World Cup in Berlin . The next year the two Brazilians won the FIVB tournament in Montreal , reached the final at the Victoria Women's Open in their home country and finished third in Stavanger , Marseille and Paris . After these successes, Leila was named Most Improved Player of 2006. After some top ten placements in 2007 with Ana Paula, Leila Barros ended her career in 2008 with her first partner Sandra Pires. In the last tournament of the year in their home country, the two achieved another main draw with 17th place.
politics
In the elections in the federal district of Brasília in 2014, Barros ran for a seat in the district parliament for the Partido Republicano Brasileiro party . Between 2015 and 2018 she was Minister for Sports and Tourism of the Federal District.
In the 2018 parliamentary elections, Barros ran as "Leila do Vólei" (volleyball Leila) for a mandate as senator for the Partido Socialista Brasileiro .
Private
Leila grew up with her mother and father, Francisco Alves de Barros, together with her brother Marcelo. She first played handball in school before switching to volleyball. Leila is married to the Brazilian Olympic and World Champion Emanuel Rego .
