The beach volleyball world championships are tournaments organized by the world volleyball association Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) to determine the world champions of women and men. Brazil has been the most successful nation in the twelve tournaments held so far.
From 1987 to 1996 international tournaments were held in Rio de Janeiro , but they are not recognized by the FIVB as world championships. The first official World Cup tournament took place in Los Angeles in 1997 . Since then, the teams from Brazil and the USA have dominated both women and men . The Laciga brothers and Paul Laciga with Sascha Heyer won silver twice for Switzerland , Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann won gold in 2009 and bronze in 2011 for Germany . In 2013 Karla Borger and Britta Büthe reached the final and were the first German women to win a medal. At the same tournament there was bronze for Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik . In 2015, Brazil won five out of six possible medals. In 2017, the Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst became the first German women to become world champions. In 2019 in Hamburg there was a men's silver medal for Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler , while the Canadian women world champions won the first medal for their country. The next World Cup was originally scheduled to take place in 2021 but has been postponed to 2022 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic , with Rome expected to remain the host.
