Julius Brink (born July 6, 1982 in Münster ) is a former German beach volleyball player . He is also the first European to win three World Cup medals. With three European championship titles (2006, 2011 and 2012), eight tournament victories on the FIVB World Tour and five German titles (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011), he is one of the most successful German beach volleyball players. His greatest successes were winning the 2009 World Cup and the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with his partner Jonas Reckermann .

Career

Brink started playing indoor volleyball at Bayer Leverkusen in 1988 . In 1999 he switched to beach volleyball. The following year he and Niklas Rademacher finished third in the U19 European Championship and played a tournament with Markus Dieckmann . After four missions with Rüdiger Strosik , he formed a duo with Kjell Schneider from 2002 , who became German runner-up in 2004. In 2005 Brink / Schneider won the World Tour tournament in Espinho and came third at the World Cup in Berlin . Then Brink got together with Christoph Dieckmann . The duo, which was trained by Bernd Schlesinger, Andreas Künkler and Markus Dieckmann, won the German championship in their first year together, became European champions in The Hague and won the World Tour in Espinho and Vitória . In 2007 Brink / Dieckmann defended their national title. You finished ninth at the European Championships in Valencia and finished 17th at the World Championships in Gstaad . They also won two CEV tournaments. At the World Tour 2008 they were successful in Barcelona and took second place twice. As the best German team, they qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing and were eliminated in the preliminary round. Then they missed defending their title in the German championship with a 2-1 defeat against David Klemperer and Eric Koreng . From 2009 Brink played together with Jonas Reckermann and became world champion with him in his first season together .

2010

At the first FIVB tournament of the year in Brasília , the two Germans took third place. At the Shanghai Open they lost in the final against the Brazilian duo Salgado / Marques . In Rome Brink / Reckermann finished fourth, at the following three tournaments in Mysłowice , Moscow and Prague they both failed in the semifinals to Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers , but were able to secure the bronze medal in the game for third place.

2011

At the 2011 World Cup in Rome , he won the bronze medal with Jonas Reckermann. For him already the second. This made him the first European player to win three World Cup medals. In the last sixteen Brink / Reckermann beat the world number one Dalhausser / Rogers before they failed in the semifinals to Emanuel Rego / Alison Cerutti. At the 2011 European Beach Volleyball Championships , there was a purely German final, which Brink / Reckermann won against Erdmann / Matysik . Then Brink was voted beach volleyball player of the year for the third time in a row .

2012

Brink / Reckermann were able to successfully defend their title at the Beach Volleyball EM in Scheveningen (Netherlands) . Brink also won the gold medal with Reckermann at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . He and Jonas Reckermann are the first Europeans to win a gold medal in beach volleyball at the Olympic Games. Then Brink / Reckermann was voted beach volleyball player of the year . Brink is now the most successful player in the men with six awards.

2013/14

In 2013 Brink played together with Sebastian Fuchs because Reckermann ended his career for health reasons. Due to a thigh injury, Brink had to cancel all tournaments from the beginning of June, including the 2013 World Cup in Stare Jabłonki . In 2014 Brink wanted to start with Armin Dollinger , but could not play because of a hip injury and announced his retirement on May 30th.

Television appearances

In 2018 Brink accompanied the Techniker Beach Tour as a co-commentator. He was later awarded the German Sports Journalist Award 2019 as the best newcomer for his performance . He was also on the Techniker Beach Tour 2019 . During the Comdirect Beach Tour 2020 he works at Sport1 as a moderator and expert. Since July 17, 2020, he has been running the podcast Shorts with David Klemperer and ARD journalist Fabian Wittke .

Private

Brink's mother is a nurse and his father is a chemist. He grew up with two brothers. Julius Brink was promoted to sergeant major in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Cologne in summer 2016 . In 2010 he completed a distance learning course in sports management . Since April 2013 he has been enrolled at the IST University for Management in Düsseldorf in the bachelor's degree in Sport Business Management .

Julius Brink lives in Cologne with his wife Verena, an architect whom he married in 2012 after the Olympic Games .
