Emanuel Fernando Scheffer Rego (born April 15, 1973 in Curitiba , Brazil ) is a Brazilian beach volleyball player , Olympic champion and three-time world champion. He is considered the most successful beach volleyball player of all time.

Career

Emanuel Rego began his career as an indoor volleyball player . In 1991 he switched to beach volleyball, and in 1994 he took part in the FIVB World Tour for the first time . With his partner Zé Marco , Emanuel took part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and became FIVB Tour Champion for the first time. In 1997 the two were able to repeat this success. In 1998, José Loiola became the new partner of Emanuel Rego, who was voted Rookie of the Year at the AVP Tour that same year . In 1999 the two Brazilians won the beach volleyball world championship in Marseille and became FIVB champions. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 they were eliminated in the second round. Emanuel, who was voted FIVB Player of the 1990s, changed partners again in 2001 and then won the FIVB Tour for the fourth time, this time with Tande Ramos .

2003 began the most successful period of Emanuel Rego, from now on in the team with Ricardo Santos . The two won the FIVB Tour every time from 2003 to 2007 and were FIVB Team of the year from 2005 to 2007. In 2004 the two Brazilians won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Athens , and a year earlier they had become beach volleyball world champions in their home country in Rio de Janeiro . In 2007 they won the Pan American Games , which were also held in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2008 Emanuel / Ricardo won the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics , and in 2009 they achieved their last joint victory at the FIVB Tour in Brasília . With a total of 33 joint successes on the World Tour, they are the leaders in this ranking. With his 76 FIVB victories, Emanuel also took first place in the all-time best list.

2010

At the first FIVB tournament of the year in their home country , the two new beach partners Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti reached the final after beating their compatriots Ricardo / Pedro and Cunha / Thiago, but lost to Rogers / Dalhausser and took second place. The Brazilians were able to return the favor at the Shanghai Open , but only in the game for third place; in the semifinals they failed because of the German world champions Brink / Reckermann . In Rome there was the new edition of the final of Brasilia with the same result. After Rego / Cerutti finished fourth in Poland and ninth in Moscow , the final in Prague was for the third time this year Brazil against USA, and for the third time Dalhausser / Rogers left the place as the winners with the only difference the two previous finals that Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti won a set. In the next attempt in Stavanger , the two South Americans failed to take revenge against the athletes from the United States, but this time they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. After a 17th place in Gstaad , the two Brazilians achieved bronze in Klagenfurt and Kristiansand , and in the Mazuri Grand Slam they shared fifth place. At the end of the season, Emanuel Rego was named Sports Person of the Year for the second time since 2005 .

2011

After finishing second in Brasilia and ninth in Shanghai , Emanuel / Alison won their first joint gold medal on the World Tour in Prague . The two Brazilians were able to repeat this success in Beijing and in Rome they achieved their third tournament victory in a row. At the World Cup , Emanuel Rego and his partner Alison Cerutti prevailed against the Brazilian team Marcio Araujo / Ricardo in the final, replacing the German team Brink / Reckermann as world champions. After a fifth place in Stavanger , Rego and Cerutti won the following two tournaments in Gstaad and Moscow . The two South Americans then took third place in Stare Jablonki and ninth place in Klagenfurt . After winning the bronze medal in Åland , Emanuel and Alison finished the tour as overall winners of 2011. For Emanuel Rego it was already the tenth success as FIVB Tour Champion. He was also named Most Outstanding , Most Inspirational and Sports Person, and together with Alison Cerutti as Team of the year .

2012

Emanuel and Alison started the season with a seventh place in the opening event , continuously improved their position in the following tournaments over a fifth place in Shanghai , third place in the Chinese capital , the finals in Prague up to victory in Moscow . The two Brazilians also reached the final at the events in Rome , Gstaad and Berlin , which they were able to successfully organize in the German capital. At the Olympic Games in London the South American duo received the silver medal after a 1: 2 defeat in the final against Brink / Reckermann. At the last Grand Slam of the year in Poland, Cerutti and Rego took fifth place. Subsequently, Emanuel was awarded as a sports person and as Most Inspirational in 2012 .

2013

At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki , Alison / Emanuel reached the semi-finals after six wins in a row, in which they had to admit defeat to their compatriots Ricardo / Filho . Alison / Emanuel lost the game for third place against the German Erdmann / Matysik . At the end of the season, Alison and Emanuel split. In their last game year together, the dethroned world champions finished fifth in The Hague , Long Beach , Sao Paulo and Xiamen and fourth in Rome . Rego won his only medal on the 2013 Tour in Moscow with Evandro . There the Brazilian duo reached the final.

2014-2016

At the opening tournament in Fuzhou , Rego and his new partner Pedro Salgado finished fifth as well as in Norway . In Shanghai and Berlin , the two South Americans took fourth place. Emanuel and Pedro achieved the best joint result in The Hague when they won the bronze medal. After two more tournaments, they parted ways. The three-time world champion then played again with the partner with whom he had achieved the most successes and reached the final with Ricardo in the first joint event of the world series since 2009. After numerous top ten placements on the 2015 World Tour , Rego ended his career in March 2016.

Private

Maria and Manoel Rego are Emanuel's parents. His sister, one year older, is called Aniele. Emanuel Rego has a son Mateus from his first marriage. Since November 2008 he has been married to the Brazilian beach volleyball player Leila Barros , whose son is called Lukas.
