Bruno Oscar Schmidt (born October 6, 1986 in Brasília ) is a Brazilian beach volleyball player . He became world champion in 2015 and Olympic champion in 2016.

Career

Bruno initially played volleyball indoors. Since he did not like the position of the player, he switched to beach volleyball. He finished ninth in the U21 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in 2005 with Vinícius de Almeida Santos . A year later he won the competition in Mysłowice with Pedro Solberg Salgado . In 2007 he formed a duo with Joao Maciel . After finishing ninth and fifth at the Challenger tournaments in Brno and Cyprus , Bruno / Maciel won the satellite tournament in Lausanne . At the Fortaleza Open she played her first tournament on the FIVB World Tour . In 2008 they were defeated in three open tournaments in the "Country Quota" and were 17th in Barcelona . This was followed by fourth place at Challenger in Brno and a final at the Lausanne Satellite. Then Bruno / Maciel came seventh at the Marseille Open for the first time in the top ten on the World Tour. They also succeeded in doing this at their first Grand Slams in Gstaad and Klagenfurt . In Kristiansand they were only defeated by the Spaniards Herrera / Mesa in the final . They then finished seventh in Mallorca and fourth in Guarujá . At the 2009 World Cup in Stavanger they came second in the group in the first main round, which they lost to the Latvians Samoilovs / Sorokins . On the World Tour they finished fifth in Marseille and Stare Jabłonki and ninth three times.

On the World Tour 2010 Bruno played with Benjamin Insfran . In their first joint appearance, Bruno / Benjamin achieved third place in Brasília. They then finished fifth in Shanghai and three ninth places before finishing fifth again in Prague . They also achieved this result in Marseille and Kristiansand. At their last FIVB tournament of the year they reached the final, in which they had to admit defeat to the Americans Jennings / Wong . At the start of the 2011 World Tour , they finished seventh in Brasília and ninth in Beijing . At the World Cup in Rome they reached the second round in the group, in which they were eliminated against the Poles Fijałek / Prudel . After finishing fifth in the Grand Slam in Moscow , they parted ways temporarily. Bruno spent the rest of the season with his former partner Joao Maciel. The duo achieved the best results with ninth place in Québec and fourth place in Klagenfurt.

In 2012 Bruno and Benjamin were reunited. In all tournaments in which they came into the main draw, they achieved top ten results on the 2012 World Tour . They came fourth in Shanghai, fifth each in Moscow and Gstaad, and ninth three times. At the Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki, Bruno and Thiago Santos Barbosa took fifth place. In the 2013 season, Bruno played Salgado with Pedro Solberg. After a fifth place in Fuzhou , they reached the final of the Grand Slam in Shanghai, which they lost to Gibb / Patterson . They finished fourth in Corrientes and then won the Grand Slam in The Hague against Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš . In Rome they took third place. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki it was only enough for third place in the preliminary round, but then Bruno / Pedro reached the quarter-finals with two wins, in which they had to admit defeat to future world champions Brouwer / Meeuwsen in the tiebreaker . At the next Grand Slam in Gstaad they lost the final against their compatriots Filho / Ricardo . They then finished ninth three times in a row before winning the final against Dalhausser / Jennings in São Paulo . Their last joint result was a third place in Durban .

In 2014, Bruno formed a new duo with Alison Cerutti , who won the South American Games in Santiago de Chile in March and made it to the final at the Fuzhou Open against the Italians Nicolai / Lupo . With the exception of Shanghai, Alison / Bruno always made it into the top ten on the 2014 World Tour . They finished third in Berlin and were only defeated in Gstaad in the final against Dalhausser / Rosenthal . In the final of the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, they managed to take revenge against Nicolai / Lupo. On the national tour, Bruno played a few more tournaments with Luciano Ferreira de Paula . The 2015 season started for Alison / Bruno with a fourth place in Moscow. After finishing 17th in the Poreč Major, they were ninth twice. At the World Cup in the Netherlands they only gave up one set before the final. They won the final in three sets against the Dutch Numbersdor / Varenhorst . Alison became world champion for the second time. Then Alison / Bruno won the Gstaad Major and the Grand Slams in Yokohama, Long Beach and Olsztyn one after the other . They also won the World Tour Final by beating Dalhausser / Lucena . This made them World Tour Champion and also received the “Team of the Year” award.

At the beginning of the 2016 season , Alison / Bruno won the Vitória Open in the final against Nicolai / Lupo after finishing fifth in Rio de Janeiro . They lost the finals of the Grand Slams in Moscow and Olsztyn against Numberdor / Varenhorst and the Latvians Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš . The next tournament victory they succeeded in Poreč against the Austrian duo Doppler / Horst . As world champions, they were set for the Olympic Games in Rio . There they were group winners despite a defeat against Doppler / Horst. With wins against Herrera / Gavira , Dalhausser / Lucena and the Dutch Brouwer / Robert Meeuwsen , they reached the final, which they won 2-0 against Nicolai / Lupo. At the end of the season, Alison / Bruno were able to repeat their previous year's victory at the World Tour Final in Toronto . At the 2017 World Cup in Vienna , the Brazilians only finished ninth. After the previous great successes also failed to materialize on the World Tour , Alison and Bruno separated in May 2018. After that, Bruno played again until January 2019 at the side of Pedro Solberg and since then with Evandro .

family

Bruno's grandfather Oswald Schmidt was German and fled to Brazil before the Second World War . His uncle is the historically most successful Brazilian basketball player Oscar Schmidt . Another uncle is the sports presenter Tadeu Schmidt .
