Career Beach

In 1996 Doppler started playing beach volleyball. He made his first international appearance at the Challenger tournament in Ostend with Helmut Hirner . The duo became Vice-European U20 Champions in Zagreb in 1997 . In 1998 Doppler / Hirner played their first open tournaments on the FIVB World Tour in Lignano and Klagenfurt . In the following season they completed two Challenger tournaments and again the Klagenfurt Open. In 2001 Doppler played with Dietmar Maderböck . In four open tournaments on the World Tour, they did not get past 37th place. They took part in the world championship in Klagenfurt . There they came against the German Olympic third party Ahmann / Hager in the tiebreak, but ultimately lost both group games and were eliminated after the preliminary round. In the Austrian championship , however, Doppler / Maderböck won the title. With Peter Gartmayer , Doppler was U23 European Vice-Champion in Esposende, Portugal .

at the Austrian Masters 2008 in St. Pölten

In 2002 Doppler formed a new duo with Nik Berger . At their first two joint open tournaments in Berlin and Gstaad , they came in ninth in the top ten. They also achieved this result at the Grand Slams in Marseille and Mallorca . At the Montreal Open and the home tournament in Klagenfurt, they did even better as fifth. At the Austrian championship, Doppler defended his title from last year with Berger. They opened the 2003 season with a third place at the Rhodos Open. This was followed by fourth place in Gstaad and four tournaments in which they each came ninth. After another fifth place in Klagenfurt, they traveled to the European Championships in Alanya . They won their preliminary round group and then reached the final without losing a set, in which they prevailed with a 16:14 in the tie-break against the German defending champions Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann . The new European champions won the first medal for Austria. After the EM, they finished ninth in the Mallorca Open and fourth in the Grand Slam in Los Angeles . At the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro , they came second in the knockout round, in which they were defeated by the Swiss Heuscher / Kobel . Nationally they managed to defend their title, so that Doppler personally became Austrian champion for the third time in a row.

Doppler / Berger started the 2004 season with a 13th place in Salvador da Bahia . After some poor results on the World Tour, they won their preliminary group at the European Championships in Timmendorfer Strand , before the defending champions were dethroned by the Norwegians Horrem / Maaseide in the round of 16 . The following week they finished seventh at the Gstaad Open. At the Grand Slam in Marseille , Doppler tore a cruciate ligament . So he missed the Olympic Games in Athens , for which he had actually qualified with Berger. In Gstaad, Doppler / Berger achieved their first top ten result of the 2005 World Tour with fifth place. At the World Cup in Berlin , they lost the Austrian duel against Gosch / Strauss at the beginning . In the second losing round they had to admit defeat to the Brazilians Santos / Rego and finished the tournament in 25th place. Things went better at the Grand Slam in Stavanger and the Stare Jabłonki Open with two ninth places. In Montreal Doppler / Berger ranked fifth in Athens Seventh and Acapulco ninth. Then the duo split up.

From 2006 Doppler competed again with Peter Gartmayer . After a 13th place at the Shanghai Open, Doppler / Gartmeyer finished seventh in Zagreb and came ninth in Espinho . In the second round of the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, Doppler suffered another cruciate ligament tear. In 2007 the duo returned to the World Tour with ninth places in Shanghai and Manama . They achieved this result three times in a row at the Grand Slams in Paris, Stavanger and Berlin. At the World Cup in Gstaad , they came second in the group to the second round, in which the new world champions Rogers / Dalhausser from the USA prevailed. With ninth places in Klagenfurt and Stavanger and fifth place in Åland , the two Austrians achieved further top ten results on the World Tour. At the EM in Valencia they defeated the defending champions Brink / Dieckmann , among others, in the main round , before they had to go into the losers round after a defeat against the Estonians Kais / Vesik . They survived this without losing a set and after a successful revenge in the semifinals they defeated the Dutch Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil in the final . At the end of the year, the European champions finished ninth in Saint Petersburg and fifth in Stare Jablonki. At the first four Open tournaments in 2008, seventh place in Prague was the best result for Doppler / Gartmeyer. At the following Grand Slams, they finished ninth in Paris and fifth in Stavanger, among others. At the European Championship in Hamburg , Numberdor / Schuil managed to take revenge against the defending champions in the second main round, who then lost to their Austrian rivals Gosch / Horst in the losing round. After a fifth place in Klagenfurt, they traveled to the Olympic Games in Beijing . There they were first in their preliminary group with three narrow wins and qualified for the round of 16, which they then lost against the Brazilians playing for Georgia, Geor / Gia . Thus they finished their first joint Olympic tournament in ninth place. They finished fifth in Kristiansand before they parted ways after the Mallorca Open.

Matthias Mellitzer became Doppler's new partner in 2009 . At the World Championships in Stavanger , the new duo just about survived the preliminary round as third in the group, but then dropped out against the later finalists Harley / Alison . At the World Tour 2009 a 13th place in Kristiansand was the best result for Doppler / Mellitzer. At home they became Austrian champions, with which Doppler won his fourth national title. In 2010 they finished fifth at the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, making it into the top ten for the first time at an FIVB tournament. At the European Championships in Berlin they reached the final against the Dutch Numbersdor / Schuil , who were again European champions. At the Austrian championship, Doppler competed again with his former partner Berger and successfully defended his title. In 2011 Doppler / Mellitzer were third in the group's preliminary round of the World Cup in Rome ; but then they defeated the US duo Jennings / Wong and reached the round of 16, in which the Danes Søderberg / Hoyer ended . This ninth place was the best international result of the season for the two Austrians. At the European Championship in Kristiansand they lost in the first knockout round against the Swiss Laciga / Weingart .

Clothing for the 2016 Olympic Games

Doppler has been playing with Alexander Horst since 2012 . They started their first season together with a seventh place at the Mysłowice Open and won the satellite tournament in Baden. At the EM in Scheveningen they stayed in the preliminary round without losing a set, but in the round of 16 they were defeated by the multiple European champions Number Dor / Schuil after three sets. After finishing fourth at the Continental Cup in Alanya , they qualified for the Olympic Games in London via the World Cup . There they were the worst of three tied duos in their group in the preliminary round and were therefore eliminated early. After the Olympic tournament they reached the final of the Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki, which the Latvians Pļaviņš / Šmēdiņš won; the silver medal was the first Austrian medal in a Grand Slam. The duo also became Austrian champions, and for Doppler it was already the sixth national title. In 2013 Doppler / Horst finished ninth in the Grand Slam in Corrientes and seventh in the Baden Masters. They then achieved fifth place in each of the successive Grand Slams in The Hague and Rome. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki they won their preliminary group and the first main round match before they had to admit defeat to eventual world champions Brouwer / Meeuwsen in the round of 16 . Then they also came ninth in Gstaad and won the Masters in Novi Sad . At the EM in Klagenfurt Doppler suffered a cruciate ligament rupture again during the second preliminary round match; it was the third such injury in his career.

In May 2014 he returned to the World Tour with Horst at the Grand Slam in Shanghai . Shortly afterwards they reached the finals of the CEV tournaments in Antalya and Baden. At the European Championships in Quartu Sant'Elena they defeated the reigning world champions Brouwer / Meeuwsen in the round of 16 and finally won the bronze medal with a success against the defending champions Gavira / Herrera . In the further course of the World Tour they achieved further top placements as fifth in Gstaad, ninth in Klagenfurt and fourth in Stare Jabłonki. Without losing a set, they also won the Austrian championship, which Doppler achieved his seventh national title. Doppler / Horst started the 2015 season with similar success. Fifth places in the Grand Slam in Moscow and the Poreč Major were followed by ninth place in Stavanger and fourth place in Saint Petersburg. At the World Cup in the Netherlands, they were eliminated as second in the first knockout round against the Americans Gibb / Patterson . After finishing ninth in the Gstaad Major, they won their second Grand Slam medal in Yokohama as third . At the European Championships in Klagenfurt they stayed in the preliminary round and in the last sixteen without losing a set before they were defeated in the quarter-finals by the Italians Ranghieri / Carambula . They also finished fifth at the Grand Slam in Long Beach and ninth at the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale .

Fifth in the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro and ninth in the Doha Open, Doppler / Horst stayed in the top ten in the first tournaments of the 2016 World Tour. As group winners, they made it to the second round of the European Championship in Biel / Bienne , which they lost to Gavira / Herrera. In the Poreč Major they reached the final, in which they only lost to the Brazilian world champions Alison / Bruno in the tie-break . They qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro via the Olympic rankings . There they managed to take revenge against Alison / Bruno in the preliminary round. They came third in the group of sixteen, which they lost against the Cubans Díaz / González .

In 2017 Doppler / Horst remained successful on the World Tour . Only in Fort Lauderdale and Gstaad did they miss the top ten, while they finished ninth in Rio de Janeiro and Moscow and fifth in The Hague and Poreč. At the World Cup in Vienna they came second in the group in the knockout phase; there they reached the final with four more wins, in which they were defeated by the Brazilians Evandro / André Loyola .

In 2018 they reached 14th place in the FIVB World Ranking.
