Alexander Horst (born December 20, 1982 in Vienna , Austria ) is an Austrian beach volleyball player . He took part in three Olympic Games, was runner-up as well as second and third in European championships.

Career

Horst made his first international appearance in 2003 when he competed with Simon Nausch at the Mallorca Open of the FIVB World Tour . The following season he played the tournament on the island with Sebastian Göttlinger . At the Gstaad Open and the Grand Slam in Klagenfurt they did not get beyond the “country quota” against their national competitors. In 2005 they made it into the main field on Lake Wörthersee and a year later they came in ninth there for the first time in the top ten. They achieved this result at the Challenger tournament in Cagliari .

The Acapulco Open at year played Horst already with his new partner Florian Gosch . On the World Tour 2007 Horst / Gosch reached ninth places at the Open tournament in Roseto degli Abruzzi and at the Grand Slam in Stavanger . They also finished seventh in the Montreal Open. At the World Cup in Gstaad they came second in the group to the round of 16, which they lost against the top seeded Brazilians Emanuel / Ricardo . A few weeks later they finished third in the Åland Open, winning their first medal on the World Tour. They lost their first game at the European Championships in Valencia , but then prevailed against their national rivals Berger / Nowotny before they were eliminated in the third round on the losing side against the Swiss Laciga / Schnider . They also came ninth at the Stare Jabłonki Open.

The 2008 season was initially less successful for Gosch / Horst; until the beginning of July they did not get past 17th places in the international tournaments. As in the previous year, they lost their opening game at the European Championships in Hamburg and then got into the third round - against Doppler / Gartmayer , among others - in which they were defeated by the Spaniards Herrera / Mesa . They qualified for the Beijing Olympics . About the playoff round of the group third, they made it to the round of 16, which they also won. Only in the quarterfinals did they have to admit defeat to the later silver medal winners Márcio Araújo and Fábio Luiz . They finished the tournament in fifth place. Then they finished fourth in the Kristiansand Open and ninth in Mallorca. In 2009 there were further top ten results at the masters tournaments in Gran Canaria , Baden (both ninth) and Berlin (seventh). At the World Championships in Stavanger , Horst / Gosch reached the round of 16 as group runner-up, in which the later finalists Harley / Alison prevailed. On the World Tour, they then finished ninth in the Grand Slams in Gstaad and Klagenfurt. The Open tournaments in Stare Jabłonki and The Hague as well as the Blackpool Masters they finished in seventh and fifth places respectively. At the European Championships in Sochi , Horst / Gosch prevailed as group runner-up in the quarter-finals against the Germans Klemperer / Eric Koreng and in the semifinals they defeated the reigning world champions Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann , against whom they had lost in the preliminary round. They then lost the final against Nummerdor / Schuil , but celebrated their greatest success to date as second in the European Championship.

They started the 2010 World Tour with a seventh place at the Shanghai Open and a ninth place at the Grand Slam in Rome. They were also ninth in the Grand Slams in Stavanger, Gstaad and Klagenfurt. In between, they reached the semi-finals at the Marseille Open and finished fourth. When they were second in the group, they lost the second round of the European Championship in Berlin against Klemperer / Koreng. The subsequent Aland Open was her last international tournament because Gosch had to end his career due to cartilage damage to his knee. In 2011 Horst therefore played with Daniel Müllner . At the World Cup in Rome , Horst / Müllner came third in the first main round, in which they were defeated by the Americans Fuerbringer / Lucena after three sets . Fifth place at the Niechorze Masters was her best result on the World Tour. At the EM in Kristiansand they remained unbeaten in the preliminary round as well as in the round of 16 against Laciga / Weingart . Against Heuscher / Bellaguarda , also a Swiss duo, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Interview Doppler / Horst before the 2012 Olympic Games

Horst has been playing with Clemens Doppler since 2012 . They started their first season together with a seventh place at the Mysłowice Open and won the satellite tournament in Baden. At the EM in Scheveningen they stayed in the preliminary round without losing a set, but in the round of 16 they were defeated by the multiple European champions Number Dor / Schuil after three sets. After finishing fourth at the Continental Cup in Alanya , they qualified for the Olympic Games in London via the World Cup . There they were the worst of three tied duos in their group in the preliminary round and were therefore eliminated early. After the Olympic tournament they reached the final of the Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki, which the Latvians Pļaviņš / Šmēdiņš won; the silver medal was the first Austrian medal in a Grand Slam. The duo also became Austrian champions. In 2013 Doppler / Horst finished ninth in the Grand Slam in Corrientes and seventh in the Baden Masters. They then achieved fifth place in each of the successive Grand Slams in The Hague and Rome. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki they won their preliminary group and the first main round match before they had to admit defeat to eventual world champions Brouwer / Meeuwsen in the round of 16 . Then they also came ninth in Gstaad and won the Masters in Novi Sad . At the EM in Klagenfurt , Doppler suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during the second preliminary round match; it was the third such injury in his career. With his substitute partner Lorenz Petutschnig , Horst finished fourth in the Grand Slam in Moscow. In October, the duo completed the Grand Slams in São Paulo and Xiamen .

In May 2014 Horst played again with Doppler on the World Tour at the Grand Slam in Shanghai . Shortly afterwards they reached the finals of the CEV tournaments in Antalya and Baden. At the European Championships in Quartu Sant'Elena they defeated the reigning world champions Brouwer / Meeuwsen in the round of 16 and finally won the bronze medal with a success against the defending champions Gavira / Herrera . In the further course of the World Tour they achieved further top placements as fifth in Gstaad, ninth in Klagenfurt and fourth in Stare Jabłonki. Without losing a set, they also won the Austrian championship, which Doppler achieved his seventh national title. Doppler / Horst started the 2015 season with similar success. Fifth places in the Grand Slam in Moscow and the Poreč Major were followed by ninth place in Stavanger and fourth place in Saint Petersburg. At the World Cup in the Netherlands, they were eliminated as second in the first knockout round against the Americans Gibb / Patterson . After finishing ninth in the Gstaad Major, they won their second Grand Slam medal in Yokohama as third . At the European Championships in Klagenfurt they stayed in the preliminary round and in the last sixteen without losing a set before they were defeated in the quarter-finals by the Italians Ranghieri / Carambula . They also finished fifth at the Grand Slam in Long Beach and ninth at the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale .

Fifth in the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro and ninth in the Doha Open, Doppler / Horst stayed in the top ten in the first tournaments of the 2016 World Tour. As group winners, they made it to the second round of the European Championship in Biel / Bienne , which they lost to Gavira / Herrera. In the Poreč Major they reached the final, in which they only lost to the Brazilian world champions Alison / Bruno in the tie-break . They qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro via the Olympic rankings . There they managed to take revenge against Alison / Bruno in the preliminary round. They came third in the group of sixteen, which they lost against the Cubans Díaz / González .

In 2017 Doppler / Horst remained successful on the World Tour . Only in Fort Lauderdale and Gstaad did they miss the top ten, while they finished ninth in Rio de Janeiro and Moscow and fifth in The Hague and Poreč. At the World Cup in Vienna they came second in the group in the knockout phase; there they reached the final with four more wins, in which they were defeated by the Brazilians Evandro / André Loyola .
