Alexander Brouwer (born November 3, 1989 in Leiden ) is a Dutch beach volleyball player . He became world champion in 2013 and won the Olympic bronze medal in 2016.

Career

Brouwer was ninth in the U19 World Cup in Bermuda in 2006 with Pelle Klein and repeated the result a year later in Mysłowice with his new partner Christiaan Varenhorst . In 2008 Brouwer / Varenhorst became vice-European champions of the U21 in San Salvo . Then they reached the final against the Italians Giontella / Nicolai at the U21 World Cup in Brighton . In 2009 she was third in the satellite tournament in Vaduz . They also played their first open tournaments on the FIVB World Tour in Åland and The Hague . At the U21 World Cup in Blackpool , they came in fifth. At the beginning of the World Tour 2010 they met at the Mysłowice Open, before Brouwer played his first Grand Slams and the Prague Open with Emiel Boersma , without reaching any top placements.

Since 2011 he has formed a duo with Robert Meeuwsen . Brouwer / Meeuwsen achieved 17th place at the Brasília Open in their first year together on the 2011 World Tour and some top positions in satellite and masters tournaments, including a tournament victory in Vaduz . At the EM in Kristiansand they reached the knockout phase as group winners and were eliminated in the quarter-finals against the German Erdmann / Matysik . At the first FIVB tournaments in 2012 they did not get more than 25th places. At the European Championships in Scheveningen they came second in the group again to the quarter-finals and were subject to the Poles Kądzioła / Szałankiewicz . As ninth in the Grand Slams in Gstaad and Klagenfurt , they then achieved their first top ten results on the World Tour. They won the satellite tournament in Vaduz again and were only beaten in the final of the Masters in Varna . They also became Dutch champions.

At the first tournament of the World Tour 2013 Brouwer / Meeuwsen finished fifth in the Fuzhou Open. They achieved the same result at the Masters in Baden . They also finished ninth in four Grand Slams. In the preliminary round of the World Cup in Stare Jabłonki , they made it to the next round as one of the best third in the group. They gave up only one set in the following four games and finally won the title with a 2-0 win against Brazilians Ricardo Santos and Álvaro Morais Filho . After the World Cup they finished fourth in Gstaad, fifth in Berlin and ninth in Klagenfurt. At the end of the year they reached the final of the Xiamen Open, which they lost to Alison / Felipe . They successfully defended their national title.

Brouwer played the first two tournaments of the 2014 World Tour with Michiel van Dorsten , finishing fifth in Fuzhou and ninth in Shanghai . At the EM in Quartu Sant'Elena he was back on the field with Meeuwsen. Brouwer / Meeuwsen qualified as group winners directly for the round of 16, but had to admit defeat to the Austrians Doppler / Horst in the tiebreaker. They also came in ninth at the Grand Slams in Berlin, Stavanger and The Hague. In Long Beach they finished fifth and in São Paulo they finished the season in another ninth place. In the 2015 season they were in the finals of the Open tournaments in Fuzhou and Lucerne , where they were defeated by the Germans Böckermann / Flüggen and the Italians Caminati / Ranghieri . After a fifth place at the Grand Slam in Moscow , they achieved their first tournament victory in the FIVB series at the Poreč Major against the Canadians Binstock / Schachter . At the World Cup in the Netherlands , however, the defending champions were dethroned in the first knockout round by the Brazilians Filho / Felipe . Then they were third in the Gstaad Major. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt , despite a defeat against Böckermann / Flüggen, they won their preliminary group as well as the last sixteen and quarter finals. After the semi-final defeat against the Latvians Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš , they also lost the Dutch duel for third place against Numberdor / Varenhorst . They achieved other top ten results as fourth in Long Beach, third at the CEV Masters in Milan and again fourth at the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale . In Puerto Vallarta they lost to the US duo Nicholas Lucena / Dalhausser in the final .

At the beginning of 2016 they came third in Rio de Janeiro and Vitória and fifth in Antalya and Moscow. At the European Championships in Biel / Bienne , after winning the group, they also prevailed against Böckermann / Flüggen and Nummerdor / Varenhorst, before they were stopped in the semifinals by the Italians Nicolai / Lupo and also lost the game for third place against Fijałek / Prudel . This was the second time in a row that they finished fourth. At the subsequent Hamburg Major they had to admit defeat in the final Lucena / Dalhausser. They finished the next major tournaments in Poreč and Gstaad in ninth place before they finished fifth in Klagenfurt. As the best team in the Olympic rankings, they qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio . There they won their preliminary group as well as the round of 16 against Canadians Schalk / Saxton and the quarter-finals against Numberdor / Varenhorst. After losing the semi-final against the later Olympic champions Alison / Bruno , they prevailed in the bronze medal match against the Russians Semjonow / Krassilnikow .
