Sam Schachter (born May 8, 1990 in Richmond Hill ) is a Canadian beach volleyball player .

Career

After training at the Westmount Collegiate Institute in Thornhill , Schachter studied at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo . In 2008 he reached 17th place with Rex Fenton at the U19 World Championship in The Hague and in 2009 he was ninth with Steve Marshall at the U21 World Championship in Blackpool . In 2010 he finished fourth at the NORCECA tournaments in Chiapas with Cameron Wheelan and in Puerto Rico with Ray Sewell . He then won the U21 World Cup in Alanya with Garrett May in the final against the Brazilians Filho / Felipe .

From 2011 onwards, Maverick Hatch was his partner. At the NORCECA tournament in Guatemala City , Schachter / Hatch finished fifth. They had their first joint appearance on the FIVB World Tour at the Brasília Open. With ninth place in Québec they achieved their best result. In 2012 they reached the final of the NORCECA tournament on Grand Cayman . In their six tournaments on the World Tour 2012 , including the Grand Slams in Shanghai , Beijing and Moscow , however, they did not achieve any top placements. In 2013 Schachter played three more FIVB tournaments with Hatch, with 25th place in Shanghai being the best result.

From June 2013 Schachter played alongside Olympic participant Josh Binstock . Binstock / Schachter won the National Volleyball League tournament in Dallas . As part of the Canadian volleyball team , the Jewish athletes took part in the Maccabiade in Israel and lost the final against the hosts. They reached another final at the NORCECA tournament in Varadero . In the continental series, they also finished fifth in Mazatlán and San José and fourth in Puerto Rico . On the World Tour 2013 she only appeared in São Paulo , where she was eliminated early.

The World Tour 2014 began Binstock / Schachter with the Fuzhou Open. They won the NVL tournaments in Dallas, Atlanta and Port St. Lucie . In the NORCECA series, they climbed from third place in Manzanillo to second place in Huixquilucan to winning the tournament in Toronto . On the World Tour, after two weaker tournaments in Long Beach and Stare Jabłonki , they achieved their first top ten result with fourth place in São Paulo. Then they achieved their first tournament victory in the FIVB series at the Paraná Open in the final against the Chileans Esteban and Marco Grimalt . They also reached the final at the Doha Open, but lost to the Germans Holler / Schröder . They also became Canadian champions in 2014.

At the start of the 2015 World Tour , Binstock / Schachter achieved fifth place at the Fuzhou Open. After two 17th places at the Lucerne Open and the Moscow Grand Slam, they reached the final of the major tournament in Poreč and had to admit defeat to the Dutch Brouwer / Meeuwsen . They qualified for the World Cup in the Netherlands . There they came third in the group to the last sixteen, in which they were eliminated against the Americans Gibb / Patterson , and finished ninth. The same result was achieved at the following major tournament in Gstaad . At the Pan-American Games in Toronto they reached the quarter-finals, but could then no longer compete because Schachter had sustained an injury to his back. On the World Tour there was a ninth place in Long Beach and a 17th place in Olsztyn .

In the early tournaments in 2016, Binstock / Schachter only achieved double-digit results on the World Tour . The Open tournaments in Fuzhou , Fortaleza , Sochi and Antalya , however, then alternately finished in fifth and ninth place. At the Cincinnati Open they were only defeated by the Brazilians Guto / Saymon in the final . At the Continental Cup in Sochi, they won a starting place for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which they could claim for themselves after an internal duel against their compatriots Pedlow / O'Gorman . At the Olympic tournament, however, they were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round. They then finished ninth at the Grand Slam in Long Beach and the World Tour Final in Toronto before they parted ways.

At the NORCECA tournament in November 2016, Schachter and his new partner Sam Pedlow competed and won the final against the Cubans González / Díaz . On the World Tour 2017 Pedlow / Schachter started with two ninth places in Fort Lauderdale (five-star tournament) and Rio de Janeiro (four stars). They finished fifth again in The Hague , ninth in Poreč and fifth in Gstaad . At the World Championships in Vienna , they finished ninth.
