Career

Binstock began his athletic career as a hockey player in Markham . He later played volleyball with a team from the Jewish Community Center in Toronto . He took part in the Jewish youth competition JCC Maccabi Youth Games and in the Maccabiade . He was also a member of the national junior team in his country.

While studying at the University of Toronto , Binstock switched to beach volleyball. He won the silver medal at the 2001 Canada Games and was three times Canadian junior champion. After completing several FIVB tournaments with Brian John Hiebert in 2003, he formed a duo with Christian Redmann in 2006 . Binstock / Redmann did not get beyond 33rd place in the Open series, but were able to achieve several top 3 placements in satellite tournaments. At the end of 2007, Binstock played temporarily with Jason Kruger before joining the Challenger tournament in Brno with Redmann in 2008.

Shortly before the 2008 Canadian Championship, he met Matt Zbyszewski and won the title. The following year, Binstock / Zbyszewski repeated the success. They played in the international series until the end of 2010 without reaching any of the top placements. In 2011 Binstock formed a duo with Richard VanHuizen . The best results were 25th place at the Grand Slam in Beijing and 13th place at the Québec Open.

In 2012, Binstock competed with Martin Reader . Binstock / Reader finished ninth at the Mysłowice Open and competed in various Grand Slams. By winning the Continental Cup, they secured Canada a starting place at the Summer Olympics in London , which they were able to take themselves through a success in the national duel against Ben Saxton and Christian Redmann . At the Olympic tournament, the two Canadians won their opening game against England's Grotowski / Garcia-Thompson . After two defeats, they qualified third in the group for the lucky loser round. There they were defeated by the Italians Nicolai / Lupo and were eliminated.

Since Reader ended his career after the tournament, Binstock initially formed a duo again in 2013 with his former partner Christian Redmann and from June with Sam Schachter . Binstock / Schachter won the National Volleyball League tournament in Dallas . As part of the Canadian volleyball team , the Jewish athletes took part in the Maccabiade in Israel and lost the final against the hosts. They reached another final at the NORCECA tournament in Varadero . In the continental series, they also finished fifth in Mazatlán and San José and fourth in Puerto Rico . On the World Tour 2013 she only appeared in São Paulo , where she was eliminated early.

The World Tour 2014 began Binstock / Schachter with the Fuzhou Open. They won the NVL tournaments in Dallas, Atlanta and Port St. Lucie . In the NORCECA series, they climbed from third place in Manzanillo to second place in Huixquilucan to winning the tournament in Toronto . On the World Tour, after two weaker tournaments in Long Beach and Stare Jabłonki , they achieved their first top ten result with fourth place in São Paulo. Then they achieved their first tournament victory in the FIVB series at the Paraná Open in the final against the Chileans Esteban and Marco Grimalt . They also reached the final at the Doha Open, but lost to the Germans Holler / Schröder . They also became Canadian champions in 2014.

At the start of the 2015 World Tour , Binstock / Schachter achieved fifth place at the Fuzhou Open. After two 17th places at the Lucerne Open and the Moscow Grand Slam, they reached the final of the major tournament in Poreč and had to admit defeat to the Dutch Brouwer / Meeuwsen . They qualified for the World Cup in the Netherlands . There they came third in the group to the last sixteen, in which they were eliminated against the Americans Gibb / Patterson , and finished ninth. The same result was achieved at the following major tournament in Gstaad . At the Pan-American Games in Toronto they reached the quarter-finals, but could then no longer compete because Schachter had sustained an injury to his back. On the World Tour there was a ninth place in Long Beach and a 17th place in Olsztyn .

In the early tournaments in 2016, Binstock / Schachter only achieved double-digit results on the World Tour . The Open tournaments in Fuzhou , Fortaleza , Sochi and Antalya , however, then alternately finished in fifth and ninth place. At the Cincinnati Open they were only defeated by the Brazilians Guto / Saymon in the final . At the Continental Cup in Sochi, they won a starting place for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which they could claim for themselves after an internal duel against their compatriots Pedlow / O'Gorman . At the Olympic tournament, however, they were eliminated without a win after the preliminary round. They then finished ninth at the Grand Slam in Long Beach and the World Tour Final in Toronto before they parted ways.

In 2017 Binstock and Aaron Nusbaum came third at the NORCECA tournament in Jamaica .
