Career

Flüggen began indoor volleyball in 2003 and last played until 2012 as an outside attacker at the second division club SV Lindow-Gransee .

In 2005 Flüggen started playing beach volleyball. First he took part in youth tournaments with changing partners. With his long-term partner Toni Hellmuth , he achieved top placings at several German youth championships from the U17 to the U19. At the U20 European Championship in San Salvo in 2008 Flüggen / Hellmuth finished ninth. A year later, Flüggen achieved the same result with Steffen Drößler in Kos . At the U21 World Cup in Blackpool , Flüggen also came in ninth with Stefan Köhler . The German Championship 2010 ended Flüggen / Hellmuth in 13th place. Then they finished ninth again at the next U21 World Cup in Alanya . From 2011 Flüggen formed a duo with Köhler. On the Smart Beach Tour , Flüggen / Köhler won the tournament in Leipzig and reached the final in Cologne. They then became U23 European champions in Porto . At the German championship in 2011, they finished fifth. In 2012 they won the Supercup in Münster and achieved a few more top positions on the national tour. At the CEV satellite tournament in Antalya in 2013 Flüggen played for the first time with Finn Dittelbach , with whom he later reached the final of the Supercup in Hamburg. At the Universiade in Kazan , the duo took ninth place.

Shortly before, Flüggen had his first appearance with Alexander Walkenhorst when the two new partners won the satellite tournament in Lausanne . Then they were only beaten in the final at the CEV Masters in Novi Sad and at the FIVB World Tour Open tournament in Anapa . At the European Championships in Klagenfurt they won their preliminary group and the round of 16 before they were eliminated against the new European champions Gavira / Herrera and finished the tournament in fifth place. They also finished fifth in the Grand Slam in Moscow . After a final defeat against Markus Böckermann and Mischa Urbatzka , they became German runners-up . Then the duo split up. Flüggen already played the last two Grand Slams of 2013 in São Paulo and Xiamen with his new partner Sebastian Dollinger and reached ninth and seventeenth places. In contrast, he completed the European Championship 2014 in Quartu Sant'Elena with Sebastian Fuchs , with the temporary partners reaching the quarter-finals against the later finalists Samoilovs / Šmēdiņš . On the World Tour, Flüggen / Dollinger initially did not get beyond 17th places. After finishing fifth at the CEV Masters in Biel / Bienne , they finished ninth at the Grand Slam in Stare Jabłonki . In the German championship they reached the semi-finals via the losers' round and won the game for third place against Armin Dollinger and Clemens Wickler .

Flüggen has been playing alongside Markus Böckermann since 2015 . Böckermann / Flüggen won the first tournament of the 2015 World Tour in Fuzhou . In the following tournaments they did not get past 17th place initially. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt they reached the knockout phase as second in the group and then lost to the Spanish duo Herrera / Gavira in the round of 16 . They then finished fifth at the Grand Slam in Long Beach. At the open tournament in Rio de Janeiro they were in the final. In the German championship they missed another medal in fourth. Internationally, after finishing second in Xiamen and fourth in Puerto Vallarta , they celebrated their second tournament victory at the Qatar Open.

At the World Tour 2016 they achieved further top ten results as fifth in the Kisch and Vitória Open and fourth in the Doha Open. In Antalya they played their next international final. At the EM in Biel / Bienne they came third in the group to the round of 16, which they lost to the Dutch Brouwer / Meeuwsen . They finished fifth in the Hamburg Major and thus secured qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where they were eliminated in the preliminary round after three defeats. Then Flüggen was voted beach volleyball player of the year . At the German championship , Böckermann / Flüggen prevailed in the final against Erdmann / Kaczmarek and won the title. Flüggen became German champion for the first time. In July 2017, Böckermann / Flüggen won the 4-star tournament in Olsztyn . At the World Championships in Vienna they reached the lucky loser round as third party, in which they were eliminated against the Italians Ranghieri / Carambula . In the tournament, Flüggen pulled a meniscus tear , which he missed, among other things, the European Championship in Jūrmala and the German championship . Flüggen was voted beach volleyball player of the year again in 2017.

After Markus Böckermann retired, Flüggen has been playing with Nils Ehlers since August 2018 . Ehlers / Flüggen achieved third place in the German championship . In 2019 they were eliminated as group winners in the first main round of the World Championships in Hamburg . The best placings on the World Tour 2019 were a fifth place in Kuala Lumpur (3-star) and a second place in Tokyo (4-star).
