Alexander Walkenhorst (born July 30, 1988 in Essen ) is a German volleyball and beach volleyball player .
Career
From 2004 to 2006 Walkenhorst played various youth tournaments with Jan-Hendrik Geilen , Daniel Wernitz and Marcel Werzinger . On June 3, 2005, he made his debut in the German series alongside Werzinger in qualifying for the tournament in Munich. In 2007 he formed a new duo with Denis Berken , which finished seventh in the German championship . In the following year, Walkenhorst / Berken in Timmendorfer Strand only narrowly missed the medal ranks due to a defeat against Böckermann / Götz . The same result was then at the U21 World Cup in Brighton , which Walkenhorst played with Matthias Penk . Because of a dispute at the tournament in Munich, Walkenhorst separated from Berken. In August 2009 he and Stefan Windscheif won the U23 European Championship in Kaliningrad and the duo came in fifth in the German championship. In 2010 Walkenhorst and his new partner Tilo Backhaus achieved some successes in the national tournament series. At the European Championships in Berlin he retired with Kay Matysik as third party after the preliminary round. Two weeks later he lost to Penk at the U23 European Championship in Kos only in the final.
After Walkenhorst from the A! B! C Titans Berg at the beginning of the year . After switching country to TV Rottenburg , he competed for the first time with Thomas Kaczmarek at the Brasília Open in April 2011 . After a few medals at German tournaments, the Rottenburg team won the CEV Satellite tournament in Lausanne in June . They then triumphed at the CEV Masters in Niechorze and the Challenger tournament in Varna . In 2012, Kaczmarek / Walkenhorst finished fifth at the European Championships in Scheveningen and won the CEV Masters in Novi Sad . Because of an injury to Thomas Kaczmarek, Walkenhorst played with Eric Koreng since August 2012 . Koreng / Walkenhorst immediately became German runner-up in Timmendorf . In the summer of 2012, Walkenhorst also began a career as a coach at BeachZeit , a beach volleyball camp provider he a. a. in Turkey , but also at several German appointments.
After separating from Koreng, Walkenhorst formed a duo with Lars Flüggen in the summer of 2013 . Flüggen / Walkenhorst won the CEV satellite tournament in Lausanne and took second place at the CEV Masters in Novi Sad and at the FIVB Open in Anapa . At the European Championships in Klagenfurt , they reached fifth place. They later became German runners-up . From 2014 Walkenhorst played again with his former U23 partner Stefan Windscheif . After poor results at the World Championships in the Netherlands and at the European Championships in Klagenfurt , Walkenhorst and Windscheif parted ways in August 2015. In 2016, Walkenhorst played with various partners, including a. with Bennet Poniewaz and with Kay Matysik . At the German championship , Matysik / Walkenhorst took third place. Walkenhorst won the CEV satellite tournament in Siófok, Hungary, with Lorenz Schümann .
Walkenhorst has been playing with Sven Winter since 2017 . The duo's greatest successes included a third place at the 3-star tournament of the FIVB World Tour in Kish Island and at the 2-star tournament in Aydin . Alexander Walkenhorst and Sven Winter were given a wildcard for the 2019 home World Cup in Hamburg; Walkenhorst had to cancel the participation due to a wrist injury and was canceled for the rest of the season. In November 2019, Walkenhorst / Winter achieved fourth place at the FIVB 4-star tournament in Chetumal, Mexico . In June / July 2020 they lost to Dirk Westphal and Max Betzien in the final of the Beach League .
Alexander Walkenhorst's sisters Kira (2016 Olympic champion) and Pia also play volleyball and beach volleyball very successfully.
Others
Together with Dirk Funk and his former beach partner Daniel Wernitz , Walkenhorst has been running the volleyball podcast without a net and sandy soil since March 24, 2019 .
In summer 2020, Walkenhorst and his podcast colleagues Dirk Funk and Wernitz initiated an alternative event due to the cancellation of the Techniker Beach Tour with the Beach League . Eight women's and eight men's teams each played against each other four times and determined the league's winner in a final four.
