Eric Koreng (born May 16, 1981 in Stralsund ) is a former German beach volleyball player .

Career

At the Austrian Masters 2008 in St. Pölten

Koreng started playing indoor volleyball in 1992 . In 2000 he switched to beach volleyball. He competed in his first international tournaments with Marcus Popp and became Vice-European U23 Champion in Poland in 2003. In 2005 Koreng played for the first time with David Klemperer . At the World Championships in Berlin they did not get past 25th place. The following year he and his new partner Kay Matysik took 13th place at the European Championships in The Hague . When Klemperer was looking for a replacement for Kjell Schneider , who was sick third party at the World Championships, in 2007 , the duo got back together and was immediately successful. She finished third in the German championship as well as in the European Championships in Valencia and the World Championships in Gstaad finished in ninth place. At the World Tour tournaments in Berlin and Klagenfurt they came second. Koreng received special attention at the final in Berlin, where he suffered a circulatory collapse in the third set due to the heat and was carried off the pitch by his Brazilian opponent Fabio Luiz. In 2008 the duo trained by Gerald Maronde reached third place at the World Tour tournament in Paris . Klemperer / Koreng were the second German team to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where they reached the quarter-finals. They then became German champions for the first time with a 2-1 win against defending champions Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann . Other highlights in Klemperer / Koreng's career were a win at the Grand Slam in Stavanger in 2010 and a second place at the Grand Slam in Gstaad . At the end of the 2011 season, Eric Koreng was named the best server of the year on the FIVB Tour . After finishing fifth at the Grand Slam in Berlin in 2012 , David Klemperer ended his beach volleyball career. With his new partner Alexander Walkenhorst , Eric Koreng was then runner-up in Germany . Since June 2013 Koreng played together with Finn Dittelbach . Dittelbach / Koreng took fifth place at the German championships . In 2014 they finished ninth at the European Championships in Cagliari . With Malte Stiel , Koreng came second at the World Military Championships in Warendorf . After a second place alongside Thomas Kröger in August 2014 on the Swiss coop beach tour in Rorschach , Koreng ended his career.

In 2014 he received the Commander's Coin for his sporting success. In 2015 and 2016, Koreng was a junior national coach at DVV. Since 2016 he has occasionally played indoor volleyball in the Regionalliga Nord on Kieler TV . Since 2017, Koreng has been the national trainer for beach volleyball players at the federal base in Hamburg.

Private

Koreng lives in Kiel , is married and has three children. He was a staff sergeant in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and a student for sports and education.
