Beach volleyball world championship 2007

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beach Volleyball World Championship 2007 took place from July 24th to 29th, 2007 in Gstaad ( Switzerland ). The competitions for women and men were held in parallel. It was the sixth official World Cup. In the women's category, the Americans Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor defended their title again and defeated the Chinese Tian Jia / Wang Jie , who were the first Asians to reach a World Cup final. In the men's final there was also a success for the USA. Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser (first world champions not from South America) succeeded the Brazilians Fabio Luiz and Márcio Araújo with a win against the Russians Dmitri Barsuk and Igor Kolodinski . The German volleyball association started with nine duos; the host country Switzerland provided six teams, and Austria was represented by four teams.

Organization and media

The World Cup games were played on a total of six courts. The grandstands offered space for 12,000 spectators. Although Gstaad is far from the sea, the city already had experience with beach volleyball through the organization of several FIVB tournaments . Nevertheless, the players had to adjust to other conditions because of the mountain air.

A total of one million US dollars in prize money was awarded to the participants. The new world champions received $ 60,000 each, the teams eliminated as fourth in the group each received $ 3,400. In addition, the winners each received 1000 points for the world rankings.

Eurosport showed some games live from Center Court. SRG SSR reported for Swiss television on channels SF2, TSR2 and TSI 2.

mode

48 teams each competed for women and men. Switzerland was allowed to host six teams, otherwise the number was limited to four women's and four men's teams per nation. In addition, three wildcards were given for women and men . Each continent was represented by at least one team.

In twelve preliminary round groups, four teams played each against each for a place in the main round. There were two points for a win and one point for a loss. In the event of a tie, first the direct comparison and then the sentence ratio counted. The two best teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams reached the next round. From there on, the simple knockout system continued until the final.

Group games

In Group A , the South Africans and the Japanese had no chance against the competition from the USA. The defending champions, who were in first position, finished the group games without losing a set. Walsh and May-Treanor were also able to win the direct duel against their compatriots Wacholder and Turner on the second day of the game - as in some previous duels - and underpinned their favorite position with 25: 9 and 25:14. Augoustides and Naidoo were the only representatives of their continent to manage only one win against Saiki and Kusuhura and, like the Japanese duo, had to say goodbye after the group matches.

In Group B , Banck and Lahme finished second behind the Brazilian finalists of the 2005 World Cup . The German duo, who took part in the tournament with a wildcard, qualified for the next round with two wins against the teams from Latvia and Switzerland and then lost significantly to Larissa and Juliana, who did not make a set in the preliminary round. Minusa / Jursone's final win against Zumkehr / Skrivan was enough to make it into the main round as third in the group.

In the opening game of Group C , the Chinese only barely prevented a decisive set. With three wins they nevertheless secured group victory. Before the top game, the Norwegians had secured second place and forced Tian Jia and Wang Jie into the third set without being able to win it. For the two duos from the Benelux countries, the World Cup was over after the preliminary round.

In Group D , two teams met each other and from Cuba both reached the main round. However, they had to bow to the dominance of the players from China. Only the second placed Ribalta / Crespo managed to win a set against Xue Chen and Zhang Xi. The duo from the Czech Republic had to say goodbye without any success.

In Group E , it was very tight. The duo from Austria lost to the Australians after two wins, but still managed to win the group because Barnett / Cook had narrowly lost their opening game against the team from the Philippines and only prevailed against the otherwise hopeless Nystrom sisters in the third set with 16:14 could. Thus three teams reached the main round with five points each.

The Group F was "German" by the draw for the group. In addition to the Italians, three DVV duos were represented, all of which qualified for the next round. Helke Claasen and Antje Röder surprised the national competition. They won against both the experienced Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau and the reigning German champions Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig. The narrow defeat against Momoli / Gioria did not change the group victory. Pohl / Rau won the set against Goller / Ludwig to be among the best third in the group.

In Group G , three teams were tied with five points each, which helped them move into the main round. The Brazilians, who started with two wins, lost to the Chinese duo on matchday three, while the Russians were able to prevail twice in three sets after their opening defeat. Only the duo from Canada did not succeed.

In Group H , the Norwegians, who were only 41st on the seeding list, dominated the competition, all of whom were higher, without dropping a set. The duo from Brazil only finished second, while the World Cup for the teams from Japan and the Netherlands ended quickly.

Four Group J games only ended in the third set. Branagh / Youngs won three times in the decisive set, securing the group win. The other teams managed to win in each of the direct duels. Four points were enough for the Canadians and the duo from Greece to move into the main round, while the second US team with the worst set ratio failed.

In Group K , three teams also prevailed. After a narrow victory against the Greek duo, the Brazilians Maria Clara and Carol took first place ahead of Karadassiou / Arvaniti. The Brazilians Saka / Rtvelo, who play for Georgia because of the internal competition in South America and derive their stage names from the proper name of the state, a three-set win against the Austrian duo was enough for third place. The Schwaiger sisters were unsuccessful.

In group L , Rieke Brink-Abeler and Hella Jurich could assert themselves safely. The Spaniard Alcon accompanied the Münster duo into the next round with her Russian partner Matwejewa. The Swiss duo Erni / Grässli, which started with a wildcard, was eliminated despite a final victory against the French, as was Barrera / Gemise Fareau.

In Group M , Renata and Talita qualified as the fifth Brazilian duo for the main round and only needed a third set against Faure / Sarpaux. The French had previously defeated Simone Kuhn and Lea Schwer in the decisive set. The Swiss national team then prevailed against the winless Italians Gattelli / Perrotta and was one of the best third in the group.

Main round

In most of the games in the first main round , the better placed teams in the seeding list prevailed. For two of the five German duos, the World Cup ended in this round. Brink-Abeler / Jurich won the German duel against Banck / Lahme. The German champions were also defeated in two sets, while Pohl / Rau defeated the last representatives of Austria. The surprise team Claasen / Röder continued its series of successes in the main round and won against the Russians Urjadowa / Schirjajewa. The Swiss Kuhn / Schwer could keep up well against the defending champion, but could not stop Walsh / May-Treanor.

In the round of 16 there was the next meeting of two DVV duos. In the duel between the German group winners, Claasen / Röder achieved their third victory against the national competition. Their game against Brink-Abeler / Jurich was one of the longest in the women's competition. In the third set they fended off five opposing match points at 31:29; In the decision set they prevailed with 16:14. Pohl / Rau only needed two sets to defeat the Brazilians Renata / Talita.

In the quarter-finals to Claasen / Röder had to deal with the defending champion. Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor had previously held their own against their compatriots Wacholder / Turner and initially did not seem to have any problems with the successful German women. However, these increased in the second set and fended off three match balls in a row. In the end, they just had to admit defeat. Pohl / Rau met a team from Brazil for the second time in a row. They lost in two sets against Larissa and Juliana, who were seeded in second position. Two German women duos in fifth place still meant the best World Cup result in the history of the German Volleyball Association.

The Chinese Tian Jie and Wang Jie, who won bronze in Berlin two years ago, defeated the Brazilian finalists of the 2005 World Cup in the semifinals and were the first Asians to advance to a World Cup final. The second Chinese duo, however, failed to Walsh / May-Treanor and then lost the game for third place against Larissa / Juliana 16:18 in the third set. The Americans, on the other hand, were also superior in the final and defended their title for the second time.

Men

Group games

In Group N , the Brazilians Emanuel and Ricardo, who are number one in the seeding list, lived up to their role as favorites with three wins. Even the Canadian duo couldn't stop the South Americans, but finished second with two wins. One win and two set wins were enough for the Spaniards to move into the main round as third in the group. Casey Augoustides, on the other hand, was eliminated with his partner Flisberg after the preliminary round, as was his wife Judith in the women's competition.

In group O , Franco / Cunha, a Brazilian duo, also prevailed with ease. They were accompanied by the Russians Arkaev / Kuzmichev, who played together for the first time in Gstaad. The Austrians Göttlinger and Strauss had no chance and were eliminated together with the Dutch.

In Group P , the defending champions from Brazil only had problems against the Portuguese on matchday three, but managed to win their third game in game three. Maia and Brenha reached the next round in third, but had to admit defeat to the duo from New Zealand. The Japanese team could only record one set win.

In Group Q , the Rogers / Dalhausser seeded in second place remained undefeated. The Dutch were able to win a set against the Americans, but lost to Geor / Gia beforehand. Nevertheless, they were the only one of the three teams to qualify with four points for the main round. The Brazilians starting for Georgia, who derive their stage names - similar to the women's duo - from the name of the country, had to say goodbye, as did the Swiss Gabathuler / Wenger, who came to the World Cup with a wildcard.

In group R , the two German duos delivered contrary results. While the German champions Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann secured group victory without losing a set, Florian Huth and Kjell Schneider, who started with a wildcard, were eliminated without any success. The Austrians Doppler / Gartmayer played the only three set game of this group against Scott / Fuerbringer and took second place. The defeated Americans also reached the next round.

No team in Group S remained undefeated. The Russians won the direct comparison against the Estonian duo on matchday three and were the first to enter the main round together with their opponents. The teams from Italy and the Czech Republic only managed one win, which is why the World Cup ended prematurely for them.

In group T , two duos from the host's country met right at the beginning. The vice world champion from 2005, Sascha Heyer, won against Schnider / Gscheidle with his partner Patrick Heuscher. In the end, both were in the next round. The Austrian team Horst / Gosch also made progress, while the Canadians could not prevail against the opponents from the Alpine countries.

In Group U , David Klemperer and Eric Koreng confirmed their success, which they had achieved a few weeks before the World Cup by reaching the final at the tournament in Berlin, and prevailed without losing a set. Harley / Pedro were the only Brazilian duo to be content with second place. The Cubans were eliminated, as were the Portuguese, who had to end the last game against Álvarez / Munder early due to an injury.

In group V , it was so closely as any other group in this World Cup. All games ended 2-0 and in the end three teams each had five points and the same set ratio. With this result, the very offensively acting Australians as well as the two Chinese duos reached the main round, while the French only finished fourth.

In Group W Jonas Reckermann and Mischa Urbatzka started with two wins before they had to admit defeat to Lambert / Metzger. The Americans had previously prevailed twice in the third set. The Norwegians were among the best third in the group after the final three-set win against the unsuccessful Latvians.

In Group X , the Americans Ring / Wong, who were given a wildcard, caused a stir. Since they were two minutes late in the second group game, they were not allowed to compete and the game was counted against them. Then they gave up the last duel. Your compatriots Gibb / Rosenthal, however, reached the next round behind the undefeated Dutch. The Norwegians benefited from the free victory after two defeats and also progressed.

In Group Y , the Laciga brothers used their home advantage to three clear wins. The Argentine duo was also qualified for the main round before the final duel. The French made it into the top third of the group while the World Cup was over for the Norwegian duo.

Main round

In the first main round , only a German duo could prevail. Klemperer / Koreng were successful against the Swiss Schnider / Gscheidle. Julius Brink, who had won bronze at the 2005 World Cup, failed with Christoph Dieckmann to the Chinese Xu Linyin / Wu Penggen and Reckermann / Urbatzka had to admit defeat to Australia Schacht / Schlack. The World Cup was also over for the remaining Swiss teams in this round. The two Austrian duo, however, reached the round of 16.

In the second round , Klemperer and Koreng were the next German duo to play against Schacht / Slack. They showed an exciting game but couldn't stop the Australians either. The Austrians Doppler / Gartmayer and Horst / Gosch faced the competition, who were in first and second position, and had no chance. The defending champions from Brazil were also eliminated in this round. Fabio Luiz and Marcio Araujo lost to the Chinese Zhou Shun / Li Jian in two sets.

The quarter-finals therefore took place without German-speaking teams. The better placed duos won their games without losing a set. In the semifinals , the Russians Barsuk / Kolodinski stopped the Australians and the Americans Rogers / Dalhausser defeated the Brazilians after more than an hour with 19:17 in the third set. Emanuel / Ricardo then also lost the game for third place . The finale was held for the first time in World Cup history without South African involvement. Rogers / Dalhausser became the new world champions with a clear win against the Russian duo.
