Merel Mooren (born September 22, 1982 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch beach volleyball player. With Rebekka Kadijk she was twice vice European champion. In the first years of her sporting career, she was also active in volleyball .

Career

Mooren began her volleyball career in 1989 indoors. Until 1997 she played as a teenager in her hometown club Allides Haarlem. She then moved to the first division club Martinus Amstelveen . From 1996 to 2000 she was also part of the Dutch national youth team, which was vice European champion in 1998 and ninth in the world championship a year later.

In 2002 she completed her first international tournaments as a beach volleyball player with Mered de Vries . In the following year she formed a new duo with Sanne Keizer , which immediately won the Dutch championship. When Rebekka Kadijk and Marrit Leenstra separated in 2004 after taking part in the Olympics, the two teams swapped their partners.

At the World Championships in Berlin , Kadijk / Mooren were seventh and two months later they reached the final of the European Championships in Moscow , which the Greek Arvaniti / Karadassiou won. The following year, the Dutch women were again in the final of the European Championship and were defeated by the Russian duo Schirjajewa / Urjadowa in front of their home crowd in The Hague . They also won the national championship in 2005 and 2006. After finishing 37th at the 2007 World Cup , they finished ninth at the 2007 and 2008 continental tournaments. In 2008 in Beijing , Mooren and her partner played at the Olympic tournament for the first time and finished in 19th place.

Since Kadijk has now ended her sporting career for the time being, Mooren formed a new duo with Marloes Wesselink . In 2009 she reached places 17 and 13 at the World Championships in Stavanger and at the European Championships in Sochi . After playing several tournaments with Margo Wiltens in 2010, she has played again with her long-term partner Kadijk since the The Hague Open. In Klagenfurt am Wörthersee she played for the first time in 2011 with Jantine van der Vlist , with whom she was eliminated in the second round of the European Championships in Kristiansand against the German Köhler / Sude .
