The 2009 European Beach Volleyball Championships took place in Sochi ( Russia ) from September 16-19 . The competitions for women and men were held in parallel. In the women's category, the German duo Sara Goller / Laura Ludwig lost to Latvians Inese Jursone and Inguna Minusa in the final with 15:17 in the tie-break. The Swiss Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr took third place. In the men's category, the Dutch team Reinder Nummerdor / Richard Schuil won the final against the Austrian representatives Florian Gosch and Alexander Horst . The Germans Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann had to give up the game for third place against the Spaniards Gavira / Herrera due to an injury .
Organization and media
The tournament, which was hosted by the Russian Volleyball Federation, was organized by the European association CEV . A total of 100,000 euros in prize money was awarded to the participants, half for men and half for women. The new European champions each received 11,000 euros and an additional 800 points for the ranking list. The broadcaster laola1.tv showed the semi-finals and finals live and free of charge in the internet stream.
mode
Sixteen teams each competed for women and men. Russia was allowed to provide three teams as hosts. Otherwise, only two duos per gender were allowed per nation. For the qualification, the position in the European ranking was decisive. In addition, a total of four wildcards were awarded.
In each of the preliminary round groups, four teams played each against each for a place in the main round. The two best teams from each group reached the quarter-finals. From there on, the simple knockout system continued until the final.
