Matteo Varnier (born April 9, 1979 in Taggia ) is an Italian beach volleyball player .

Career

Varnier played his first international tournaments in Italy in 1999 and 2000 with Davide Sanguanins . In 2005 he returned and competed with Riccardo Lione . At the European Championships 2005 , the new duo lost in the third round against the Swiss Egger / Laciga and then eliminated in the tie- break against the Spaniards Garcia Thompson / Luna . In the same year Lione / Varnier finished fifth in Athens and fourth in Acapulco . In 2006 they achieved further top ten results. At the European Championships in The Hague , however, they said goodbye early after two defeats against the Czechs Biza / Kubala . In 2007 they were eliminated in the preliminary round of the World Cup in Gstaad and had to admit defeat to the Germans Klemperer / Koreng and the Austrians Gosch / Horst at the EM in Valencia .

After Varnier had achieved a fifth place in Stare Jabłonki with Lione in 2008 , the duo split up before the Olympic tournament in Beijing . Varnier played with Paolo Nicolai in 2009 . At the World Championships in Stavanger , Varnier / Nicolai reached the first main round in second place and were defeated by Canadians VanHuizen / Redmann . Then they were eliminated from the European Championship in Sochi after the preliminary round. They also became Italian champions that year. The next year they came in 17th place three times. In 2011 Varnier competed with Alex Ranghieri at the Brasília Open.
