John Garcia-Thompson , Spanish Juan Claudio Garcia Thompson (born June 8, 1979 in Palma ) is a British beach volleyball player of Spanish origin. He played for Spain until 2006 and for Great Britain from 2009 .

Career

Garcia-Thompson played his first international tournaments in 1999 and 2001. In 2002 he formed a duo with Fabio Díez , who lost to the Swiss Heuscher / Kobel in the third round at the European Championships in Basel and was eliminated in the losing round against the Austrians Gartmayer / Nowotny . A year later, the European Championship in Alanya ended for Garcia Thompson and his new partner Antonio Cotrino Heras, despite an opening victory against the Swiss Egger / Heyer, as the group bottom in the preliminary round. Shortly afterwards, the Spaniards came in second in the group in the knockout round of the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro and lost to the Brazilians Fred / Brazão .

In 2005 Garcia-Thompson competed with Javier Pineda Luna . At the World Cup in Berlin , Garcia / Luna did not get past 25th place after defeats against the Brazilians Franco / Tande and the Portuguese Maia / Brenha . In August they fought their way to the semi-finals at the European Championships in Moscow, despite the opening defeat against the Russians Dajanow / Jeremin ; only in the fifth losing round did they fail against the German duo Dieckmann / Scheuerpflug . At the end of the year Garcia Thompson played a few more tournaments with Javier Bosma . In 2006 he reached a ninth place with Alex Ortiz Vargas at the Open tournament in Roseto degli Abruzzi .

Garcia-Thompson returned in 2009 with Robin Miedzybrodzki . After the premiere in Stare Jabłonki , the duo came in 33rd place in Kristiansand and Åland . In 2010 they played the two Scandinavian Open tournaments again and reached the 41st place.

In 2011 Garcia-Thompson formed a new duo with Steven Grotowski . In their first year together, they achieved their best result with 17th place at the Shanghai Open. At the Grand Slam in the same place in 2012 they came in 25th place as well as at the Brasília Open. For the Olympic Games in London they were nominated by the British federation as the host's team. This made them the first British ever to compete in an Olympic beach volleyball tournament. In their three group games, however, they failed to win a set, so they were eliminated after the preliminary round.
