Sara Goller (now Sara Niederig ) (born May 21, 1984 in Starnberg ) is a former German beach volleyball player . With her partner Laura Ludwig she was twice European champion and four times German champion .

Career

Goller began in 1992 when TSV Herrsching with the volleyball in the hall and moved in 1997 to SV Lohhof . In 2001 she went to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen , with whom she and her future beach partner Laura Ludwig played in all three finals (German championship, German cup and European cup) in the 2004/05 season.

Goller has been a beach volleyball player since 1999. At first she played with changing partners. With Friederike Romberg , she won the U20 European Championship in Salzburg in 2003 . In the same year she finished fifth with Anja Günther at the German championship in Timmendorfer Strand . On May 15, 2004, she founded a new duo with Laura Ludwig, which was marketed under the name gollerplusludwig and had belonged to Hertha BSC since November 1, 2005 . The team trained by Olaf Kortmann celebrated their first mutual success with third place at the U23 European Championship 2004 in Brno . The first participation in the "big" European championship in Timmendorfer Strand ended in 25th place. At the next European junior championship in 2005 in Mysłowice , Goller / Ludwig won silver. In the same year, the women who had been promoted to the national duo finished third in the German championship and took part in a world championship for the first time in Berlin (17th place).

At the Austrian Masters 2008 in St. Pölten

In 2006 they finally established themselves in the German elite. They won the U23 European Championship in St. Pölten , took part in the World Tour, where they finished fifth in Acapulco , and came fourth at the European Championship in The Hague . In the final against Rieke Brink-Abeler and Hella Jurich , they won the German championship. In the following year they continued their ascent. At the World Championships in Gstaad it was only enough for 17th place, but at the European Championships in Valencia they reached the final. They also won the silver medal in Espinho and the bronze medal in Klagenfurt at the FIVB World Tour tournaments , came fourth in Stavanger and fifth in Marseille and defended their national title in the final against Helke Claasen and Antje Röder . The readers of the specialist magazine Volleyball-Magazin voted Sara Goller Beach Volleyball Player of the Year 2007.

Goller / Ludwig achieved the greatest success of their careers to date by winning the European Championship in Hamburg in 2008 . Shortly before, they had already secured qualification for the Olympic Games in Beijing . There they were eliminated in the second round after a three-set defeat against the Austrians Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger . Goller defended her title as beach volleyball player of the year. With Laura Ludwig she won the national title for the third time in a row at the German championship in 2008. The year 2009 was the year of the third places for the two Hamburg women. Bronze medals at the FIVB tournaments in Brasília , Moscow and Marseille as well as a third place at the German championships in the Ahmann-Hager-Arena , plus a fourth place at FIVB tournaments in Shanghai and three fifth places. Goller and Ludwig were only able to secure the silver medal at the European Championships .

2010

The two Hertha BSC athletes started the year successfully . At the Brasilia Open , they first defeated the Olympic champion Misty May-Treanor with her new partner Nicole Branagh and then the Brazilian duo Larissa / Juliana . In the final, however, Goller / Ludwig had to admit defeat to the two Brazilians, as they did at the tournament in Portugal in 2007 and thus postpone their first victory at the FIVB Tour. While the two Germans didn't get along at all in Shanghai and only finished 25th, they again reached the final in Rome , but this time failed because of the current world champions April Ross and Jennifer Kessy . At the following tournaments in Seoul and Moscow , Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig were defeated by the two Americans and each took fifth place. In Gstaad , the two Germans reached the final for the third time this season, but for the third time there was a defeat, this time as in Brasília against the top seeded Brazilians Larissa and Juliana. After a fifth place in Marseille , Goller / Ludwig achieved a medal rank in Klagenfurt for the fourth time in 2010. In the game for third place, the Hertha BSC women defeated the Austrians Barbara Hansel and Sara Montagnolli , on whom they had failed in the battle for the semi-finals in Marseille. After finishing ninth at the FIVB tournament in Poland , the two Germans won their second European championship. In the final they defeated their compatriots Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler . At the following FIVB tournament in Sanya , Goller and Ludwig also reached the final after victories over the world champions Kessy and Ross as well as the double Olympic champion and world champion Kerri Walsh with her partner Nicole Branagh, which they lost against the Chinese Xue and Zhang Xi. At the last event of the year in Thailand , the Hamburg women finished fifth after three wins and two defeats.

2011

Goller / Ludwig won the bronze medal at the 2011 European Beach Volleyball Championships in Kristiansand . At the German Championships in 2011 they were able to win the national title for the fourth time. The two Germans were not quite as successful at the FIVB World Tour as last year. In addition to a silver medal in Stavanger , they achieved four other placements among the top eight teams. At the Myslowice Open Goller / Ludwig took fourth place, in Brasília and Moscow they were fourth and in Åland seventh. At the World Championships in Rome they lost in the round of 16 against May-Treanor / Walsh.

2012

In Rome they were only stopped in the final by Kuhn / Zumkehr (SUI). At the European Championships in Scheveningen (Netherlands) they finished ninth. Then they won the national tournament of the Smart Beach Tour on Norderney. At the Olympic Games in London they reached second place in the group stage and thus qualified for the round of 16. There they met with Holtwick / Semmler on the second German duo, which they defeated 2-0. However, they were defeated by the Brazilian team Larissa / Juliana 2-0 in the quarter-finals and thus finished fifth. At the German championships they were eliminated early after two defeats and finished the tournament in seventh place. Sara Goller announced her retirement from beach volleyball in September 2012, before returning to the hall in October 2012. For the DSHS SnowTrex team in Cologne , she played in the second Bundesliga the following season .
