Liliana Fernández Steiner (born January 4, 1987 in Alicante ), called Lili , is a Spanish beach volleyball player . She became vice European champion in 2013 and took part in the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016.

Career

Liliana took part in the U19 World Cup in Saint-Quay-Portrieux in 2005 with Nuria Moncunill and reached 19th place. She achieved the same result with Cristina Hopf at the U21 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro . In this competition she was ninth in 2006 in Mysłowice with Ilenia Arocha Ruiz . In 2007 she played a satellite tournament in San Sebastián with Alejandra Simon . Then she appeared at the U21 World Cup in Modena for the first time with Elsa Baquerizo Macmillan and came in fourth.

In 2008 Liliana / Baquerizo played for the first time on the FIVB World Tour . Her best result in the first year was a 13th place at the Dubai Open. In 2009 they achieved this result at the Masters in Gran Canaria and the Stare Jabłonki Open and finished 17th in the Grand Slam in Gstaad . At the U23 European Championships in Jantarny , they came in seventh. At the European Championships in Sochi, they were eliminated as the bottom of the group after the preliminary round. They finished fifth at the last tournament of the year in Phuket . On the World Tour 2010 they achieved ninth place in each of the successive Grand Slams in Klagenfurt and Stare Jabłonki. At the 2010 European Championships in Berlin they came as group winners in the round of 16, which they lost to the Austrians Hansel / Montagnolli . They also finished ninth at the The Hague Open and fifth again at the end of the year in Phuket.

They started the 2011 season with some double-digit results. At the 2011 World Cup in Rome , they reached the knockout round as third party and were finally defeated by the Americans Fendrick / Hanson in the round of 16 . There were further ninth places at the Grand Slams in Gstaad and Moscow . Then the results got even better with fourth place at the Québec Open and fifth place at the Grand Slams in Stare Jabłonki and Klagenfurt. At the European Championships in Kristiansand , Liliana / Baquerizo could only play in one of three preliminary round matches due to injury problems and were eliminated early. They finished the The Hague Open in seventh place. At the start of the 2012 World Tour , they finished fifth in the Grand Slam in Shanghai . At the European Championships in Scheveningen they came second in the knockout phase and defeated the Swiss Grässli / Goricanec , the Austrians Montagnolli / Hansel and the German duo Borger / Büthe . After the semi-final defeat against the Greek Tsiartsiani / Arvaniti , they prevailed in the game for third place against the Czechs Háječková / Klapalová . They achieved another top ten result in fifth in Klagenfurt. They qualified for the Olympic Games in London via the Olympic rankings . Liliana / Baquerizo reached another final at the start of the 2013 World Tour in Fuzhou , where they had to admit defeat to Chinese Xue Chen and Zhang Xi . The following Grand Slams brought them more top ten results; they finished ninth in Shanghai and fifth in Corrientes and The Hague. At the World Cup in Stare Jabłonki they were second in the group and finally lost the round of 16 against Ross / Pavlik from the USA. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt they won all the preliminary round matches and then did not give up a set until the final. They lost the final in a tiebreaker against the Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger . After finishing ninth in Long Beach and Berlin, they finished third in Moscow on the World Tour . The 2014 season began for Liliana / Baquerizo with a fifth place in Shanghai and a lost final at the CEV Masters in Baden . At the European Championships in Quartu Sant'Elena they were second in the group and won the first two knockout games against Russian duos without losing a set before they were defeated by the Germans Bieneck / Großner in the quarter-finals and took fifth place. The other Grand Slams ended consistently in the top ten and in Stavanger they only lost in the final against the US duo Walsh / Ross .

On the World Tour 2015 , Liliana / Baquerizo continued their successful streak with fifth places in Moscow and Saint Petersburg and a few ninth places. At the World Cup in the Netherlands , they won their group games and the first knockout round without losing a set. In the round of 16 they lost to the later finalists Lima / Fernanda from Brazil. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt, they were also eliminated as group winners in the round of 16, this time against the Greek duo Arvaniti / Tsiartsiani . They then finished fifth in Long Beach and seventh in the World Tour Final in Fort Lauderdale . After double-digit results in the first tournaments of the 2016 season and a ninth place in Fuzhou , they reached the final in Sochi , in which they were defeated by the Swiss Heidrich / Zumkehr . They also finished third in the Cincinnati Open. At the European Championships in Biel / Bienne they came again as group winners in the round of 16, which they lost against the French Longuet / Jupiter . After the European Championships they were fifth in Hamburg and Olsztyn , ninth in Poreč and Gstaad and fifth again in Klagenfurt. They qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio via the Olympic rankings . There they stayed in the preliminary round, including against the world champions Ágatha / Bárbara , without losing a set. In the second round, however, they had to admit defeat to the Russians Ukolowa / Birlowa and came in ninth place. Then they reached the final at the Grand Slam in Long Beach , in which the Olympic thirds Walsh / Ross prevailed. After finishing ninth at the World Tour Final in Toronto , Liliana Fernández Steiner ended her international career.
