Zhang Xi ( Chinese  张 希 ; born April 19, 1985 in Nantong , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese beach volleyball player .

Career

Zhang Xi started her sports career in 1996 with the Tong Zhong women's volleyball team. In 2001 she played an international youth beach volleyball tournament with Zhang Yi. Zhang Xi started with Wang Yepan for the first time at the FIVB World Tour 2002 in Rhodes . She also only played one event in 2003 with Hu Xiaoyan. In the following two years she played two tournaments with Tian Jia , seven tournaments with Ji Linjun and ten competitions with Hu Xiaoyan. With Ji 2004 and Hu 2005 she reached ninth place as the best placement.

In 2006, the athlete from Nantong competed with Xue Chen for the first time . The two athletes from China won their second joint tournament in the world series in Shanghai . After reaching the final in Saint Petersburg and Warsaw , they won another victory in the last event of the year on Phuket . The next year, Xue and Zhang reached the semi-finals in nine out of sixteen events, finishing second in Montreal , Kristiansand and Hong Kong (Challenger and Satellite tournaments) and receiving bronze medals on Sentosa as well as in Warsaw and Åland . At the world championship in Gstaad they lost both the semi-finals against the eventual world champions Walsh / May-Treanor and the game for third place against the Brazilians Larissa / Juliana and came fourth.

In 2008 the Chinese won in Seoul and Moscow and took third place in Osaka and Gstaad . However, they achieved their greatest success at the Olympic Games in the capital of their home country. In Beijing , Xue Chen and Zhang Xi lost the semifinals to their compatriots Tian and Wang Jie , but then won the third place game and bronze medal against Brazilians Talita and Renata. With her new partner Huang Ying, Zhang reached the final at their first joint tournament in Sanya, after which she was named Most Outstanding of 2008. In the 2009 competitions, Zhang and Huang were ninth each in Shanghai, Stavanger , Moscow and Phuket.

2010

Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, who were now again become partners, started with a seventh place in Brasília in the World Tour 2010 , then they were in Shanghai and Rome Fifth, in Seoul they finished ninth. They achieved their first victory of the year at the Grand Slam in Moscow. After finishing fifth in Stavanger , the bronze medal in Gstaad , seventh in Marseille and ninth in Klagenfurt , the Chinese reached the final five times in a row. They were able to win the tournaments in Åland and Sanya , in Stare Jabłonki , Kristiansand and The Hague they came second. At the end of the year, the Asians finished ninth in Phuket . Xue Chen and Xi Zhang achieved top ten placements in all fifteen competitions that year.

2011

As in the previous year, the two Asians started the 2011 World Tour with a seventh place in the Brazilian capital, which they repeated at the third tournament of the year in Shanghai. The Chinese achieved further placements among the eight best teams in Beijing , where they finished fifth, as well as in Stare Jabłonki and The Hague. There they were fourth. The athletes from the Far East won medals at the World Championships in Rome and the Grand Slam in Moscow as well as at the Sanya Open and the Grand Slams in Gstaad and Klagenfurt. At these tournaments, Xue Chen and Zhang Xi lost the final. However, they were able to win both the Åland and the Thailand Open. As in the previous year, the two Chinese women achieved a placement among the top ten teams at all events in 2011. In December, Xue Chen and Zhang Xi won the Asian Championships in Haikou .

2012

At the first open tournament in Brasília in 2012 , Xue Chen and Zhang Xi celebrated their next success. They also won the Grand Slams in Shanghai and Moscow. In Berlin they were only defeated in the final. They also made it into the top ten at the other Grand Slams. They also qualified for the London Olympics . There they reached the second round of the group second in the preliminary round and came to the semi-finals with two more wins. They lost this game against Walsh / May-Treanor as well as the duel for bronze against Larissa / Juliana. They then successfully defended their title at the Asian Championship.

2013

In 2013, the Chinese won the first open tournament of the season in Fuzhou and finished fifth in the Grand Slam in Shanghai. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki they had to be content with third place in their preliminary group. However, they then did not give a sentence four times in a row and reached the final. With a 2-1 win against the German Borger / Büthe , they became the first Asians to become world champions and thus ended the series of successes for the Brazilian and US teams.
