Okka Rau (today Okka Rau-Schmeckenbecher, born January 5, 1977 in Leer , Germany ) is a former German beach volleyball player .

Career

Okka Rau-Schmeckenbecher began playing volleyball indoors and on the sand in 1996 . Since 2001 she played together with Stephanie Pohl . In the very first year the duo came third in the German championship in Timmendorfer Strand and came 17th in the world championship in Klagenfurt . At the first World Tour tournament in Osaka it was enough for seventh place. In 2002, Pohl / Rau became German champions and made several fifth places on the World Tour. They finished the European Championship in seventh place. At the next continental tournament in Alanya they won the title after a German final against Andrea Ahmann and Jana Vollmer . They finished the 2003 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in ninth place. In 2004, the German runners-up and fifth of the European Championship played in Timmendorfer Strand at the Olympic Games in Athens and also came fifth there. The following year, the women trained by Bernd Schlesinger took second place in the German championship and third place at the World Tour tournament in Milan, bronze at the European Championships in Moscow , but had to be content with ninth place at the World Cup in Berlin . In 2006 they reached third place in the German championship and the World Tour tournament in Klagenfurt and first place in the European rankings. They finished fifth at the 2007 World Cup in Gstaad . In 2008 they finished fourth in the European Championship and became the first German team to ever win a World Tour tournament in Marseille . This also qualified them for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where they reached the second round.

Since 2003 Okka Rau-Schmeckenbecher has been active as an active spokesperson for the interests of athletes. With five awards as beach volleyball player of the year , she is the most successful woman in this category. In 2007 she was voted Hamburg's sportswoman of the year.

In November 2009, Okka Rau-Schmeckenbecher and her long-term partner Stephanie Pohl announced the end of their successful beach volleyball career so that they could concentrate fully on their future teaching activities in Kiel .

Private

Okka Rau-Schmeckenbecher studied teaching . On December 23, 2010 she married the volleyball player Stefan Schmeckenbecher .
