Marie-Andrée Lessard (born December 6, 1977 in Guatemala City ) is a Canadian beach volleyball player of Guatemalan origin.

Career

Lessard completed her first international tournament in 1999 at the Toronto Open with Christy Goodfellow . The following year she formed a duo with Nancy Gougeon , who came in 41st place in the first Grand Slam in Chicago . At the 2001 World Cup in Rome, Lessard / Gougeon prevailed against their compatriots, their compatriots Boileau / Morin and the Austrians Swoboda / Mellitzer in the preliminary round , before they had to admit defeat to the Greek duo Sfyri / Karadassiou in the tiebreak of the first knockout game . In 2002 further open tournaments and grand slams followed with two 17th places as the best results.

At the last open tournament of the year in Vitória , Lessard formed a new duo with Sarah Dawn Maxwell , with whom she had already entered a tournament in Fortaleza in 2001 . In 2003 Lessard / Maxwell achieved their best results at the Grand Slam in Berlin (17th place) and the Osaka Open (25th place). They achieved similar results at the end of 2004, when they also won the Challenger tournament in Cagliari . In 2005 they reached the top ten of an open tournament in Milan for the first time. At the subsequent World Cup in Berlin , after the opening win against Hu / Zhang , the bronze medalists Tian Jia / Wang Fei, who also came from China, were too strong for the Canadians, who, however, still made it into the third round on the losing side and after the defeat against the Swiss duo Kuhn / Schwer took 17th place. In front of their home crowd in Montreal , Lessard / Maxwell achieved the best Open result of their joint career with seventh place. In the same year they became Canadian champions for the first time.

In 2006 they achieved their best international placement also in Montreal. The two Canadians finished ninth at the 2007 Espinho Open. The World Cup in Gstaad was less successful. Behind three teams with equal points, Lessard / Maxwell had to say goodbye with three defeats in the preliminary round. In the national championship they won the title again that year. In 2008 they did not get past 25th place at the international tournaments.

Lessard made her first appearance in Guarujá in 2008 with her last partner Annie Martin . Lessard / Martin finished fifth in Dubai and ninth in Sanya . At the 2009 World Cup , they got into the knockout round in third place and failed in three sets against the US duo Turner / Akers . In 2009 and 2010 they got several ninth places. In addition, Lessard was able to win the national championship for the third time in 2009. In 2011 Lessard / Martin reached 13th place in Mysłowice . At the World Cup in Rome they met a Brazilian duo and the Germans Holtwick / Semmler and Brink-Abeler / Grün in the preliminary round , and they only managed to win one set.

In 2012 Lessard / Martin qualified for the Olympic Games in London . There they reached the tiebreaker in every preliminary round game, but couldn't win any of the three games. After the tournament, the two Canadians ended their sporting careers together. Lessard achieved the longest career in Canadian beach volleyball.
